Job Description

The successful candidate will help our ER63/ Thrust Vector Control (TVC) Test Team in supporting the various workloads we do every day. Support will include tasks to assist TVC Test Engineers and Senior Level Technicians with testing, modifications and maintenance of test equipment, setup/modification of data acquisition, including instrumentation and controls, and other support as required. You will also get the opportunity to work alongside our engineers and senior level technicians, learn from them in the areas of Thrust Vector Control. This internship is intended to be for a work timeframe of 6 months.

The educational requirement is enrollment in Drake State Technical College or Calhoun Community College pursuing a 2-yr degree in Electrical Technology or equivalent degree. Must have completed at least one semester, including one or more courses in Electrical Technology and one or more courses in Industrial, Measurement, Quality, or Manufacturing Safety topics. It is desired that the candidate is currently taking electronic or technical courses.

Key Responsibilities & Opportunities:

• Perform visual checks, shorts tests, and calibration set-up on electronic instruments.

• Troubleshoot an electronic system to determine root causes and remedies for malfunctions.

• Perform soldering as needed for instrumentation cables.

• Observe and examine equipment during testing to detect specific issues, such as loose/missing parts, solder bridges, shorts, etc.

• Comply with process standards, such as recording test data, recording repair work performed on work orders, and maintaining clean and organized workspaces.

• Collaborate with team members on technical requirements within and across repairs and projects.

• Maintain all safety certifications pertinent to the TVC Systems Integration and Component Development Branch.

• Work as part of a team of engineers and technicians to provide TVC Systems Integration and Component Development Branch test support for NASA while maintaining a strong consciousness about safety.

• Knowledge of testing instrumentation and equipment.

• Experience with Microsoft Office Suites (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is highly desired.

• Teamwork and partnering skills are required.

• LabVIEW Software Test Tool experience is desired but not mandatory.

• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

• Completed first semester and currently working toward an Associate’s degree in electronics or a related field.

• Completed basic electronic theory & lab courses.

• Ability to interpret electrical drawings for troubleshooting and installation of equipment.

• Willing to work a minimum of 20 hours per week for two consecutive semesters (summer included if internship begins in the spring).

• Requires set-up knowledge of Digital Voltmeters, Power Supplies, and Oscilloscopes.

• Requires analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving abilities.

• Must be hardworking, able to work unsupervised, enthusiastic, honest, trustworthy, and reliable.

• The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, automobile liability insurance and successfully complete a company defensive driving training class.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3.0 GPA or higher.

• Conscientious and hard-working.

• Understanding of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)

• Current or past participation in extra-curricular activities and/or part time position(s).

Essential Functions:

Work Environment

Intended workload:

80% Engineering and Technician shadowing and OJT (In the areas of electrical/wiring, controller development, and data acquisition) 5-10% computer work/training, 5-10% physical labor.

Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel only onsite at MSFC (Marshall Space Flight Center).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (10%). Requires work in a test facility environment including physical labor (lifting/moving equipment, parts, test components, boxes). 80% (working with other technicians on electrical/wiring, instrumentation and controls, and data acquisition of TVC Test Lab test stands and equipment).

Equipment and Machines

LabVIEW, a graphical programming environment for designing and developing measurement and control systems is used extensively in this lab and the intern will be required to utilize this tool on a daily basis. This position requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance

Normal workday is from 6.00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Regular on-site attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required. This is a part-time position at no more than 20 hrs per week with your schedule falling within the normal work day hour. Schedule can be adjusted to support class schedule and worked out to best support the TVC Lab test team.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to follow instructions and work with supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
