Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers Data Engineering team constructs pipelines that contextualize and provide easy access to data by the entire enterprise. As a VP, Data Engineering you will drive growth and transformation of our analytics landscape. In this role, you will oversee teams designing and building data solutions that capture, explore, transform and utilize data to support Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and business intelligence/insights. You will leverage your story-telling ability when ingesting data from multiple sources and relaying information and actionable insights to partners and decision makers. As an effective leader you will select, develop, mentor and evaluate personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

Travelers Business Insurance ($20B+) is seeking an ambitious and proven Vice President to lead our growing Data Engineering and Data Management team. You will be at the forefront of expanding our data/feature engineering capabilities, modernizing data pipelines, and significantly enhancing data quality and governance.

This role requires strong leadership skills to motivate highly skilled data professionals while delivering significant value to our business partners. You will bring unparalleled visibility to data flows from source systems to modeling and pricing datasets, ensuring transparency and efficiency. You’ll bring an eye towards transforming our analytics and AI/ML data stack to reduce friction for our data customers and accelerate our time to value.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership:

  • Drive Long-term Strategy: Shape and implement the long-term strategy around analytic data products, data movement, data consumption patterns, and persistence capability to support the Business Insurance line.

  • Build and Develop Teams: Mentor and guide data engineering group leaders and directors to advance their expertise and develop future leaders to meet Travelers’ business objectives.

  • Business Impact: Oversee and direct the development of functional business plans and OKRs, with a direct impact on company revenue, expense, and growth.

  • Collaboration and Influence:

  • Executive Leadership: Present recommendations to executives, influencing leadership decisions through effective communication and storytelling. Partner with engineering teams to ensure development efforts align with business needs.

  • Act as a "trusted advisor" across the company, recognized as an expert both internally and externally.

  • Work across the organization to share and develop best practices in people, process, and technology development.

  • Ensure excellent data governance and data quality, metadata, and lineage.

  • Oversee external data support and provide oversight to ensure the integrity, integration, and quality of external data sources.

  • Engineering Excellence:

  • Modernize Cloud Data Pipelines: Lead efforts to modernize and create common data pipelines for analytics and AI teams, ensuring they are secure, scalable, and aligned with enterprise architecture and application infrastructure.

  • Drive MLOps and LLMOps implementations and manage complex data sources.

  • Enhance Data Quality and Consistency: Implement actionable strategies to improve data quality, governance, and consistency, reducing data wrangling needs for actuaries, data scientists and the analytics community.

  • Additional Duties:

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the business objectives and strategic goals of Travelers.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM related field or equivalent

  • Fifteen or more years of related work experience

  • Eight or more years of leading teams.

  • Strategic Vision: Proven ability to align data strategies with business needs, enterprise architecture, and application infrastructure.

  • In-depth and applied knowledge of data engineering tools and techniques, including ML Ops, Databricks and/or Snowflake, AWS, DBT, AI/GenAI Data Pipelines, Data Automation, Python, Model Monitoring, and Alerting.

  • Proven experience with enterprise scale oversight of Data Quality, Data Governance, and integration of third party data assets.

  • Excellent communication and influencing skills (especially in large/complex organizations), with the ability to present recommendations to executive leadership and act as a trusted advisor.

  • Knowledge of or experience in P&C insurance.

  • Experience with Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) for automating data engineering tasks, improving data quality, and generating synthetic data

What is a Must Have?

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training with data tools, techniques, and manipulation.

  • Nine years of data engineering or equivalent experience

  • Three years of previous management experience.
