Job Description

Position Summary:

We are looking for a hard-working Scientist II, Cell Biology to conduct bioreactor experiments in the development of new formulations and processes for cell culture media and supplements.

Responsibilities:

The Scientist II, Cell Biology will complete experiments to develop new cell culture media and supplements. The scientist will generate data to show product performance and application. The chosen candidate will complete approved study plans, with a main focus on conducting experiments in small-scale bioreactors and microbioreactor systems.

Key Objectives of the role:

  • Completes experiments with guidance while following laboratory protocols

  • Analyzes data and contributes to technical reports and product summaries

  • Maintains and operates bench top bioreactor systems, including microbioreactors

  • Provides data to collaborators within the company and develops external application data presentations and marketing literature.

  • Participates in cross-functional project teams that have a strong emphasis on product commercialization

  • Generates critical project documentation required for product development

  • Aligns with all company safety, training, and quality regulations and procedures

  • Troubleshoots and solves technical problems of moderate scope

  • Maintains knowledge of current industry-relevant trends, and investigates new methods and technologies through scientific literature review

  • Maintains accurate laboratory notebooks to protect intellectual property in accordance with relevant Thermo Fisher required standards

  • May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned

Minimum Qualifications (must have):

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3-plus years of experience or Master's degree in Biology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry or other related field, or equivalent knowledge and experience

  • Previous cell culture experience with bioproduction cell lines used in protein production or vaccine applications (e.g. CHO, HEK293, BHK, VERO)

  • Experience with the operation of bench-top stirred tank bioreactors and microbioreactors and related process development laboratory equipment

  • Experience with methods and techniques of small-scale mammalian cell culture

  • Demonstrated competence in data analysis and problem solving

  • Effective communication of scientific results in a clear, concise, & accurate manner

  • Ability to manage multiple project tasks efficiently

Preferred Qualifications (nice to have):

  • Prior industrial experience with process development and/or bioreactor workflows

  • Experience with using perfusion or microcarriers in bioreactor processes

  • Experience with viral infection methods and virus quantification assays

  • Experience with microbial cell culture methods and techniques

  • Working knowledge of scientific principles and proven proficiency in statistical design of experiments (DOE)

  • Understanding of chemical, biochemical and physical interactions of cell culture media and reagent components

  • Prior experience in a technical role with accountability to project teams in phase-gate or similar product development processes

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in Maryland is $72,600.00–$108,900.00.
