We have an exciting opportunity for a Structural Mechanics Analysis Engineer (Human Landing System) to join our team!

** We are actively searching for qualified candidates for this potential opening; however, we do not have assurance at this time when the position will be finalized and opened. The Structural Mechanics Analysis Engineer (Human Landing System) will:

  • Manages and guides development of structural system requirements, concepts, workforce resource loading, and schedules

  • Monitors status and recommends strategies to meet Project schedule commitments ensuring commercial providers remain within acceptable limits

  • Perform structural analysis of primary, secondary, and tertiary structures (including finite element modeling and hand calculations) to assess the commercial lander provider's spacecraft

  • Review models, analysis, test plans, test reports, and any other associated hardware performance verification data sets for crewed lunar lander spacecraft and all government furnished hardware that will be manifested onto the human-rated lunar lander spacecraft

  • Identify structural anomalies and provides technical expertise to determine engineering recommendations for issue resolution

  • Must be willing to occasionally travel to commercial lander providers and other NASA centers​

  • Perform other duties as required

Here’s what you’ll need :

Requisition Qualifications:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2- 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area

  • 3 years of experience designing, analyzing, or building structural or mechanical systems (internship, competitive school projects, and research-based experience qualify)​

Requisition Preferences:

  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or structural engineering

  • 5 years of professional experience in any, or in support of the following industries: aerospace, automotive, aviation

  • Master's degree or PhD in aerospace, mechanical, or structural engineering

  • Familiarity with relevant NASA, DoD, ASME, and AIAA design & construction standards (e.g. NASA-STD-5001, NASA-STD-5017, NASA-STD-5020, JSC 65828)

  • Ability to read, interpret, relay relevant information, and provide feedback on part schematics and drawings which utilize geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T)

  • 1 years of experience with modeling software, such as Creo or NX

  • Proficiency with the following FEA solvers: ABAQUS, ANSYS, or Nastran

  • Familiarity with material, geometric, and contact non-linear analyses

  • Competency with complex bolted joint analyses, including fail safe, and ability to identify potential bolted joint failure modes

  • 3 years of professional experience performing stress analysis of welded structures (including heat distortion and residual stresses)

  • Familiarity with composite structural analysis (including delamination, potted inserts, and damage tolerance)

  • Understanding of fatigue and fracture mechanics principles and familiarity with fatigue and crack growth analysis codes, such as NASGRO

  • Scripting experience using Python, VBA, or Matlab

  • Proficiency with the following structural sizing optimization solvers: HyperX, HyperSizer

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to succinctly present analytical results and recommendations​

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
