Job Title: Metallurgical Engineer
Job Description
The Metallurgical Engineer will perform various types of metallographic testing on customer samples and materials, and complete all necessary reporting and documentation. Responsibilities include:
Predominantly performs intermediate to advanced, routine and non-routine metallurgical analyses using light optical microscopy with minimal supervision.
Examinations include, but are not limited to complex microstructure characterizations, microhardness profiles, case depth by optical and microhardness methods, recast layer, sensitization procedures, weld qualifications, defect identification, hydrogen embrittlement, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
Interprets specifications, procedures, and engineering drawings and customer supplied standards.
Operates specimen preparation equipment, light optical microscopes, stereoscopes, manual and automatic hardness testers, and scanning electron microscope.
Provides guidance to order entry, sample distribution, sales, and junior analysts/engineers to resolve questions or issues.
Acquired practical testing certifications such as specific grain size evaluation, certified welding inspection (CWI), etc.
Hard Skills
Bachelor's in Materials Science
2+ years of professional experience in metals testing or MS/PhD level education
Experience utilizing a light optical microscope
Work Environment
Mainly lab environment with some computer work. Monday through Friday, 1st shift.
