Location: Preferred location for position is Hartford, but would consider candidates located in Valley Forge, PA.

The HR Business Partner is a strategic partner and advisor to HSB leadership, management teams, and employees. Responsible for aligning business objectives to talent strategies, the HR Business Partner is a strategic thinker who is also able to work in a hand-on manner to deliver results. He/she can understand the business strategy, make sound recommendations on people-related topics and develop clear actionable steps to support achievement of business goals and objectives.

Responsibilities under minimal direction:

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and strategic partner to assigned business units, consulting with management on all people-related topics including but not limited to talent management, performance and development, organizational design, compensation and strategic workforce planning. Customize solutions in response to specific identified business goals and objectives.

  • Advise and coach managers on leadership and management skills.

  • Lead assigned client groups through all cyclical HR programs including talent management, compensation planning, succession planning, etc. driving toward fair and quality outcomes.

  • In close collaboration with Talent Acquisition partners and business unit leaders, contribute to the development of hiring strategies for assigned clients. Ensure staffing actions are in alignment with headcount and budgets and participate in the selection process for key positions. Develop competitive offers for hires.

  • Analyze human capital data and metrics and use the information to make appropriate recommendations. Guide business leaders as they make informed people-related decisions.

  • Champion local, regional and global talent initiatives and relying on a solid knowledge of the Company’s talent, make recommendations to link talent with appropriate opportunities.

  • Act as a change agent and help to guide the organization through changes in operating structures and models

  • Coach managers and employees regarding performance issues and disciplinary matters. Consult in the development of performance improvement plans in accordance with the corrective action process.

  • Manage and resolve employee relations issues. Partner with legal and other HR colleagues to conduct effective and objective investigations.

  • Facilitate targeted organizational redesign, including managing any associated staffing issues and/or reductions in staff. Participate in M&A activities as necessary.

  • Act as a liaison between business units and the HR Centers of Expertise to ensure that corporate programs align to business needs.

Successful candidates will possess the following skills/capabilities:

  • 5+ years Human Resources experience with 5+ years of HR Business Partner experience in a matrixed corporate environment. HR experience in an insurance or financial services company is a plus.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced degree and/or certifications (SHRM CP or PHR) are a plus

  • Ability to navigate through complexity and execute in ambiguous situations by adapting approach and demeanor to match the shifting demands of different situations

  • Strong ability to understand business strategies

  • Strong verbal & written communication skills

  • Strong consultative and coaching ability

  • Effective facilitation and presentation skills

  • Ability to promote change and manage resistance in times of corporate transition

  • Able to influence without authority and develop trusting relationships

  • Ability to have difficult conversations while maintaining working relationships

  • Strong knowledge of federal and state laws & regulations

  • Broad knowledge of HR functional areas
