Quinnipiac University Armed Public Safety Sergeant in Hamden, Connecticut

Overview:

Quinnipiac University invites applications for the position of Armed Public Safety Sergeant. Under the direction of the Chief of Public Safety, or designee, the Public Safety Sergeant shall provide a safe and secure environment for faculty, staff, students, and guests of the University while protecting the assets of the University.

Responsibilities:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Supervise Public Safety Officers during assigned shift or special events

  • Conduct Roll Call and trainings

  • Respond to calls for service and supervise responding officers as appropriate

  • Work closely with outside law enforcement agencies on matters of mutual interest

  • Approve written reports using NEXGEN

  • Supervise Public Safety Dispatchers

  • Conduct performance reviews of subordinates

  • Issue timely warnings and Emergency Alerts in accordance with the CLERY Act

  • Available to work extra shifts that may arise due to illness, vacations, special events, etc., at all campus locations

  • Provide assistance to Residential Life/Student Affairs on all student conduct incidents

  • Conduct other administrative duties as required

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; and associate's degree

  • 5 or more years in law enforcement may substitute for the education requirement ( associate degree)

  • Bachelor's degree preferred

Qualifications:

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Basic computer skills required

  • Candidate must pass extensive background investigation

  • Candidate must pass physical exam and drug screen

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills required

  • Excellent interpersonal and human relation skills required

  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment and common sense

  • Excellent report writing skills

  • Ability to engage with diverse groups of people

  • Ability and willingness to work rotating shifts covering all days of the week and all hours of the day including weekends and holidays

  • At least two (2) years of continuous service as Armed Public Safety Officer with Quinnipiac University Department of Public Safety, or

  • Less than two (2) years of continuous service as Armed Public Safety Officer with Quinnipiac University and at least three (3) years of supervisory experience in the rank of Sergeant or above with an outside law enforcement agency, or

  • At least five (5) years of supervisory experience in the rank of Sergeant or above with an outside law enforcement agency

*Note: Applicants that have been the subject of disciplinary action within two years of application are not eligible.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit

  • Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person

  • Occasionally push or lift items

  • The employee is directly responsible for safety, wellbeing, and work output

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus

  • Requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff
