About the Role

This role is to create book covers and interiors and contribute to the group’s overall performance by implementing a successful project management system, and by completing all necessary tasks with focus on quality, accuracy, timeliness, and accountability.

Responsibilities:

  • Create custom, high-quality cover designs.

  • Build full cover mechanical (front, back, spine) via press specs provided by printer

  • Deliver appropriate, market-quality designs

  • Understand the publishing market and competitors to ensure designs are unique and effective

  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers.

  • Exhibit efficient workload management with timely delivery and organized file structure

  • Create original designs as well as adapt model and series designs

  • Provide design images (cover, text, graphics, etc) in a form suitable for the Marketing department to use in promoting products

  • Select stock images from photo-libraries and commission illustrators when appropriate as part of a cover design

Requirement

  • College degree or equivalent in Graphic Design with 3-5 years of practical experience as a designer, preferably within a publishing environment

  • Book cover design experience required; book interior design experience desirable but not required

  • High knowledge level of: (a) information design and the design needs of different types of publishing products, (b) typography, (c) current design software; Adobe CS Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), MS Word, MAC-OSX environment, (d) current prepress requirements, (e) current basic standards for electronic products, and (f) computer and file system management

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate with other groups in a team environment (e.g. Marketing, Editorial)

  • Ability to self-manage and work independently.

  • Detail-oriented with creative skills

  • Ability to work under pressure on a high volume of projects with continually changing priorities.
