Job Summary The Design Engineer (Wearables - Clothing) is focused on designing and creating textile based wearable tech parts and products; combining creativity and engineering expertise for their aesthetics, and manufacturability. Works closely with other team members in designing, qualifying, evaluating, and testing clothing materials and the wearable device itself.
Will travel overseas to learn manufacturing processes, understand feedbacks, and explain design considerations to NPI and other design/development teams for newly developed processes, and or products. Will gain good understanding of commonly used manufacturing and tooling processes in this emerging wearable industry.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Create conceptual sketches and CAD visualizations of the design
Develop, design and build patterns, samples, and prototypes
Responsible for the final design of the wearable product or part
Search, identify, and validate materials from suppliers
Ensure performance and durability on prototypes and samples and document results
Design and/or assist in the design of manufacturing tools
Determine product assembly processes, assembly order, and create assembly instructions
Create and conduct evaluation procedures on selected materials and document results
Contribute in defining final assembly processes, optimization, and in creating assembly instructions
At the appropriate phase gates, provide a complete design package to enter into PDM system
Lead the design team in providing onsite technical support for engineering runs, and production releases
Develop quotations and schedules for their portions of design, with little or no assistance
Stay abreast of the latest material and process technologies that are competitive and cost effective
Collaborate within Singapore’s research, innovation, and enterprise ecosystem to gain access to new capabilities and new technologies that can be applied to the design and development of wearables
May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Education & Experience Requirements
Degree or Certification in Apparel Design, Manufacturing, Pattern Making or equivalent work experience
with apparel design, manufacturing experience
Proficient in sewing using industrial sewing machines is preferred
Good knowledge in fabrics and other clothing materials
Proficient in at least one popular engineering CAD software
Previous involvement in releasing a product into a manufacturing environment
At least four-year experience in apparel making including pattern design is preferred
Strong verbal and written communication skills, speaks Mandarin is preferred
Experience with wearable technology involving textiles and integration of electronics preferred.
Familiarity with some of clothing manufacturing processes and tests, such as sewing, heat press, lamination, dispensing, curing, die cutting, and laser cutting/etching, wash-ability, stretch-ability, abrasion, color fastness test
