Position Summary

The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s Office of Academic Affairs invites applications for the Community Assistant Dean of the Grand Rapids Community Campus. The college was one of the first community based medical schools in the nation and conducts its clinical training for third and fourth-year students throughout the state in eight communities - Lansing, Flint, Grand Rapids, Midland, Detroit, Southeast Michigan, Traverse City, and the Upper Peninsula - fulfilling its mission of serving the people of Michigan. The Community Assistant Dean role is the chief academic officer for the community campus and is responsible for developing and maintaining collegial educational partnerships with local and regional health systems. The Community Assistant Dean will administer the medical student education program, manage the community campus team, assure compliance with accreditation requirements, advise students in career and professional development, recruit and support community faculty, work toward advancing inclusion and diversity and responding to the needs of the underserved, and develop community resources to support the undergraduate medical program.

The Community Assistant Dean is specifically responsible, within their campus, for:

  • Administering, directing, and coordinating the medical student education program as consistent with the academic policies of the college and university.

  • Responsible for assuring compliance with accreditation requirements, completing information requests as part of the continuing accreditation process, and participating as appropriate in accreditation preparation and site visits.

  • Advising students in career and professional development in both group and individual settings.

  • Preparation of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation for submission with student application for residency programs.

  • Administering, directing, and coordinating programs and activities designed to facilitate and support medical students.

  • Implementing college policies for student and program evaluation and review.

  • Implementing the department, college, university policies for community faculty recruitment, appointment, review, promotion, and retention.

  • Representing the college and facilitating inter-community communication and developing cooperative relationships among campuses, faculty, and programs, to support the undergraduate medical education program.

  • Identifying and developing community resources to support the undergraduate medical program, including developing and maintaining collegial educational partnerships with local and regional health systems.

  • Developing and implementing programs to enhance the educational resources of the community-based faculty.

  • Facilitating the development and/or maintenance of university-community relationships in graduate medical education to support the undergraduate medical education program.

  • Supervising, and directing the administrative staff and faculty including Clerkship Directors, Director of Student Programs, Community Outreach Program Specialist, and faculty of the community who are charged with the implementation of college academic policies.

  • Participating in college administrative and faculty committees that are charged with the development and/or implementation of academic policies.

  • Administering, directing, and coordinating the financial resources from the college in a responsible and fiscally-sound manner.

  • Representing the college in creating research-related activities and appropriate clinical and community partnerships.

  • Collaborating with directors of certificate programs in the community to integrate required academic programs with certificate activities.

  • Supporting the work of the college external relations department in fostering engagement with local and regional community organizations.

Academic department and rank (Assistant, Associate, Full Professor) will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Position will include clinical and/or teaching responsibilities in addition to administrative duties.
