Job Description

A Protective Force Officer (PFO) is the most visible contributor within the NREL Community to detecting, deterring, and denying threats and hazards in support of a safe and supportive work environment. This position is located within the NREL Office Laboratory Protection (LP) Operations group. NREL is a free-flow campus with staff and visitors regularly checking in at our gates and buildings. Though non-armed, PFOs utilize de-escalation tactics to mitigate threats and ensure safety. PFOs respond to emergencies and incidents, and using a customer service approach, see them through to recovery and reconstitution of normal operations. PFOs are an integral part of the NREL campus providing security and emergency preparedness protection services in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, Department of Energy (DOE) Orders, and contractual requirements.

This Protective Force Shift Supervisor will oversee and guide our team of dedicated PFOs in managing incident response across diverse scenarios. This pivotal role involves not just leadership but also mentoring, operational command, and fostering a workplace culture defined by integrity and exemplary leadership.

This opening is for Shift 3 (1500-2330) .

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Guidance : Provide comprehensive leadership to Protective Force Officers (PFOs) covering training, coaching, performance management, conflict resolution, scheduling, and fostering a culture of recognition and open communication.

  • Positive Work Environment : Cultivate a positive work atmosphere rooted in professionalism, respect, and transparent communication within the team.

  • Relationship Management : Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with staff, management, visitors, and partners.

  • Security Oversight : Oversee day-to-day security operations, emergency preparedness, and rapid, professional incident responses.

  • Accurate Reporting : Generate precise incident and shift reports, ensuring meticulous documentation.

  • Collaboration and Evaluation : Collaborate with various departments, actively participate in performance testing, exercises, and drills, contributing to ongoing operational document review and enhancement.

  • Patrols and Policy Adherence : Conduct thorough vehicle and foot patrols, monitor security systems, and ensure compliance with NREL policies and procedures.

  • Emergency Response Proficiency : Utilize the Emergency Notification System (ENS) adeptly for efficient internal and external responses.

  • Alignment with Company Goals : Understand broader company goals and align team efforts to meaningfully contribute to organizational objectives.

  • Proactive Problem-solving : Address issues before they escalate, proposing strategies aligned with the company's vision for enhanced performance.

  • Stakeholder Trust Building : Establish trust and credibility with stakeholders through consistent, reliable results, and demonstrated integrity.

  • Team Representation : Act as a conduit, transparently conveying team concerns, ideas, and feedback to higher management.

  • Operational Leadership : Lead operational activities, ensuring security requirements and manpower utilization align with protection and emergency management strategies.

  • Facility Protection and Resolution : Provide protection for DOE facilities, personnel, contractors, and visitors, resolving operational issues with NREL staff.

  • Equipment and Training : Ensure personnel have necessary equipment as per operational orders, implement operational procedures, and conduct necessary training for job proficiency, securing NREL and DOE assets.

  • System Proficiency : Maintain proficiency in operating all CMS systems and promptly report any system outages or issues for resolution.

  • Authority and Planning : Address safety concerns, report security violations, plan, coordinate, and schedule overtime and appointments.

  • Supervision and Attendance : Supervise daily operations, ensuring PF personnel attend required training, appointments, and operational commitments affecting the schedule.

  • Special Project Support : Attend meetings for special projects needing operational and ProFor assistance.

  • Accountability for Safety Legacy : Be accountable to NREL staff for setting safety standards, providing resources for assigned work, and fostering a safe work environment.

Basic Qualifications

Previous supervisory experience may be required. Certification and/or degree in specified field is required. Knowledge of legal and ethical management issues and practices. Strong understanding of applicable field of expertise. Strong task management and budgeting skills. Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, problem-solving and negotiation skills. Demonstrated ability to make appropriate decisions regarding day-to-day work activities. Promotes and models ethical and professional interpersonal and business behaviors. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, motivate and direct personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • The successful candidate must pass a preemployment background check and physical, including behavioral health.

  • Applicants must provide proof of a valid and current license to operate a motor vehicle. Strong working, knowledge of effective leadership practices and ability to apply them to everyday situations.

  • Prior experience in a security-related field such as criminal justice, military, homeland security, corrections, security, EMS, or behavioral health.

  • Knowledge of legal and ethical management issues and practices.

  • Prior supervisory experience (strongly preferred, not required).

  • Ability to effectively train, lead, motivate, and appreciate personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values.

  • Ability to use a variety of workplace technology.

  • Strong understanding of security field of expertise.

  • Strong task management and budgeting skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication, problem-solving and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to make appropriate decisions regarding day-to-day work activities.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Manager I / Annual Salary Range: $73,200 - $120,800
