Housekeeper Job Description

General Description and Purpose of this Position

The housekeeper performs duties to maintain cleanliness and neatness of household surroundings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS POSITION

  • maintains clean spaces in the household, including resident rooms, household common spaces, support spaces and equipment
  • maintains supply of all materials to meet resident needs in the household
  • supports all aspects of the household environment, including pets and plants.
  • coordinates work with the household caregivers to ensure the housekeeping needs of the household are met within the staffing resources of the household
  • complies with all regulatory sanitation requirements pertinent to the physical environment
  • uses appropriate cleaning supplies and equipment to clean floors, furniture, bathrooms and other areas as needed
  • understands and implements universal precautions to prevent transmission of disease through contamination
  • facilitates meaningful conversations and maintains a warm, pleasant atmosphere with elders
  • meets all resident and household needs by actively assisting (to the extent of cross training and certification) in all tasks to meet identified needs

Dementia Sensitivity: Is skilled at encouraging persons with dementia.

Leadership: Understands the significant impact a clean, cheerful environment has on residents sense of well-being. Uses time spent doing housekeeping chores in proximity to residents as an opportunity to connect and observe.

Critical Thinking: Able to evaluate housekeeping needs and apply appropriate cleaning materials and / or equipment. Able to organize cleaning routines in logical manner that does not impede household life. Is able to organize storage areas in a logical manner, and stocks supplies appropriately to maintain adequate inventory.

Taking the Initiative: Beyond scheduled cleaning tasks, remains alert to sporadic situations that require attention. Initiates conversations with residents while performing cleaning tasks in their vicinity, and remains observant of resident behaviors throughout cleaning tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Experience in skilled care or residential services for the elderly desirable. High school diploma or GED desirable but not essential. Able to operate department specific equipment and to use cleaning products appropriately.

Resident Rights

All staff are expected to maintain the confidentiality of resident information.

Remember to knock before entering a residents room. Honor the residents personal and property rights. Inform the resident when it is necessary to move personal possessions during cleaning process.

Working Conditions

Works in well-lighted and well-ventilated areas.

Moves intermittently during working hours

Is subject to frequent interruptions and may need to reschedule tasks.

Is in olved with residents, personnel, visitors and family members.

Communicates with team members of the neighborhood, as well as other department personnel.

Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions, such as severe weather, evacuation and disasters.

Attends and participates in continuing education programs.

Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment and cuts throughout the work day, as well as reactions from dust, disinfectants and other air contaminants.

Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB, AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.

May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Physical and Sensory Requirements

Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.

Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
