Summary:

The intern position is a professional development internship based out of the Ahtna Cultural Center, located on the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve Visitor Center (NPS) campus in Copper Center, Alaska. This position is provided through a partnership and with funding from the National Park Service. It is during the summer season from approximately May through September to support a project involving Ahtna cultural resources.

The internship involves working onsite with Ahtna, Inc. and National Park Service personnel to learn interpretation (walks and talks for visitors), customer service, education programs, and other professional skills. The position may also provide support for field projects, which may include work in remote field sites and collection of field data. Main duties are providing visitor services at the Ahtna Cultural Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Promoting public understanding of Ahtna culture, the Ahtna Mission, and the Vision for Ahtna Cultural Center.
  • Assist visitors in developing a keener awareness, appreciation and understanding of the Ahtna lands and NPS they are visiting
  • Answering phone calls, providing visitors with NPS and Ahtna lands maps, and information they will need while visiting the NPS and Ahtna Lands, including regulations and rules.
  • Providing guided walks, talks, audiovisual presentations, and programs
  • Assist in the planning and implementing of special initiatives, education, and outreach programs
  • Ability to learn in a on the job environment and provide a level of professionalism to the public.
  • Attentiveness to safety and ability to take training for safety requirements
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ahtna shareholder or descendent

  • Age range: 16-17 years of age

  • Ahtna Language and Cultural knowledge

  • Ability to work 8-hour days, 5 days a week

  • Applicant interested in learning field work and on the job training.
  • Ability to complete and pass pre-employment background check and drug screening
  • Ability to use computer and programs necessary to complete duties

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPR/1^st^ Aid certified
  • Strong computer skills, including expertise with MS Office suite

  • Driver's license

Shareholder Preference:

Pursuant to PL 93-638, as amended, preference will be given to qualified Ahtna Native Corporation Shareholders, Descendants, and Spouses in all phases of employment.

Work Environment

  • The primary work assignments for this position are based in an indoor setting, including working in an office, and providing visitor services to the public.
  • Some work may occur in an outdoor setting and be subject to changes in weather conditions and noise levels.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent lifting, sitting, standing, stooping for prolonged periods of time, using hands/fingers requiring dexterity, should have good hand-eye coordination and motion control in coordination with handling tools, equipment, and other related components.
  • Reaching with hands and arms for items above and below sight level, talking, hearing, and seeing (up close, at a distance, along the periphery, with depth, color perception, and the ability to adjust focus); walking from place to place within the project location with occasional use of stairs and no elevator available; bending, pushing, pulling, and standing for up to 8 hours.
  • Frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds such as small electrical components, equipment, and other materials.
