GENERAL DESCRIPTION Plans, organizes, implements, and delivers the instructional program in the content area of assignment at the state school for youth who have been adjudicated delinquent of felony offenses, assigned to a high security correctional facility, and have a wide variety of temperaments and specialized needs. Work involves assessing students, providing individualized, competency-based instruction, and maintaining a positive teaching/learning environment in which youth are guided and encouraged to develop and fulfill their academic potenti l. May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per work week and/or be on call. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Plans, prepares, and delivers instructional activities that facilitate an active learning environment. Observes and evaluates youths performance and development; provides appropriate feedback on work; and encourages and monitors the progress of individual students. Identifies the learning needs of students and interprets assessment information. Identifies and selects different instructional resources and methods to meet youths varying needs. Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all learning activities. Maintains accurate and complete records of youths progress and development; and updates all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws and agency policies. Provides educational services to potentially aggressive/combative youth in a correctional setting with a wide variety of temperaments (volatile, aggressive, suicidal) and specialized needs (chemically dependent, sexual offenders). Treats youth with respect in all situations and the ability to react quickly and effectively to verbally and physically defuse hazardous, combative, volatile situations on an as needed basis. Keeps up to date with developments in the subject area, teaching resources, and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans. Monitors outcomes for racial, ethnic, and gender disparities and takes action to address identified disparities. Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed. Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures: Reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible. Completes required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested time frames. Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies. Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelors degree and a valid Secondary Texas Teacher Certification in the specified subject assignment area. Must be highly qualified in all areas of teaching assignment. Note: Any degree, diploma, high school equivalent, or course hours required to meet minimum qualifications must be from an accredited educational institution. Pre-employment conditions require acceptable results from mandatory: pre-employment drug test; finger printing and criminal records check; Fitness-for-Duty Assessment which may include both physical and behavior evaluations. Requirements for Continued Employment: Failure to maintain required licensure/certification will result in termination of employment. Obtain and maintain certification in TJJDs Use of Force techniques, which requires physical restraint of juveniles. This position is subject to mandatory pre-employment drug testing and any offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results from a drug screen conducted for the agency.
