Campus Title Proposal Developer/Sponsored Research Associate

Position Summary

SUNY Geneseo invites applications for the position of Proposal Developer/Sponsored Research Associate. The Proposal Developer/Sponsored Research Associate will support the College by working with faculty and staff members on the development, writing/editing, and submission of competitive proposals to external sponsors. This includes identification of funding opportunities using various grant databases, sponsor websites, and other sources and communicating this information to interested faculty and staff. The Proposal Developer/Sponsored Research Associate will provide editing suggestions to faculty and staff members submitting proposals, develop proposal budgets, complete form pages, write institutional descriptions and other narrative sections as needed, prepare proposals in final format, and generally work with faculty/staff to complete proposals. Electronic submission of proposals using Grants.gov, Research.gov and other proposal submission systems is also required. The Proposal Developer/Sponsored Research Associate will also write institutional proposals and will offer periodic workshops on grants writing and funding opportunities.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree by time of appointment

  • Three years of comparable/related professional experience

  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member

  • Ability to organize and prioritize assignments

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated success working in a deadline-driven environment

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working environment

    Preferred Qualifications

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or doctoral degree

  • Certified Research Administrator ( CRA ) or Certified Pre-Award Research Administrator ( CPRA ) designation

  • Experience in a pre-award office in a university or other research institution working one-on-one with faculty and staff in proposal and budget development

  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal and agency regulations pertaining to university grants (e.g. 2 CFR Part 200)

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Experience developing and conducting workshops

  • Significant experience with submission of applications through Grants.gov, Research.gov, and other submission systems.

Find sources of grant, contract, and fellowships to support faculty, staff, and institutional needs and communicate this information:

  • Become familiar with the interests and needs of faculty and staff seeking grants by meeting with faculty and staff members in groups or individually to explore funding needs and plans, and by serving as first contact for faculty and staff members seeking external funding.

  • Stay apprised of general trends and specific opportunities on public and private external funding using appropriate news sources, databases, and professional development opportunities.

  • Conduct funding searches for specific needs using SPIN , Foundation Center Online, Grants.gov, and other sponsor websites, and communicate results to faculty and staff members.

  • Promote the use of the SPIN funding database across campus.

    Assist faculty and staff with proposal development:

  • Provide guidance to faculty and staff related to required proposal contents and components.

  • Proofread, suggest edits, and recommend structural changes to proposal sections.

  • Provide sample documents and guidance and links to instructions for supplemental documents.

  • Conduct searches for reference materials as needed.

    Develop institutional proposals:

  • As directed by the Provost and Director of Sponsored Research, develop and write proposals for broad-based institutional initiatives.

  • Work as a team member for institutional proposals developed with contracted grant writing firm (e.g. TRIO proposals, NSF S- STEM and Noyce Scholarship proposals).

    Develop proposal budgets and budget justifications:

  • Develop proposal budgets in compliance with SUNY , Research Foundation for SUNY , and sponsor guidelines, and prepare required budget forms and budget justifications/narratives for submission.

    Edit, format, obtain administrative approvals for, and submit proposals:

  • Complete proposal form pages and “boilerplate” information, and finalize the proposal format.

  • Facilitate the internal review process of proposals and ensure that proposals are in compliance with sponsor, state, and institutional policies.

  • Assume signature authority for proposal submissions where appropriate.

  • Submit proposals using electronic proposal submission systems such as Grants.gov, Research.gov, other federal systems, and other submission systems used by NY State and private sponsors.

    Job Duty/ Responsibility

    Develop and present workshops and assist in website maintenance:

  • In consultation with the Director of Sponsored Research, develop and present workshops on topics such as grants writing, sponsoring agencies or specific programs, changes to required documents, the SPIN funding database, etc.

  • Assist Director in maintaining the Office of Sponsored Research website.

    Percentage Of Time 5%

    Attend professional and sponsor meetings and workshops:

  • Travel regionally/nationally to attend, or virtually attend, sponsor workshops and professional conferences.

  • Participate in on-line webinars and training programs offered by sponsors and the Research Foundation for SUNY .

  • Attend and participate in on-campus meetings and events related to assigned responsibilities.
