Campus Title Assistant Professor of Musicology

Position Summary

The Department of Music & Musical Theatre at SUNY Geneseo is seeking applicants for a tenure track Assistant Professor in Music with a specialty in Musicology or Music History to begin August 2025. The department offers a BA in Music with four different tracks (Performance, Musicology/HiTEC; Jazz and American Music Studies; and Music Business, Recording and Production) as well as a BA and BFA in Musical Theatre.

Duties Include: Teaching three courses per semester, including: at least one general education course per year; one section of the college’s first-year writing course per year; introductory and upper-level courses for majors and minors in both western classical music and popular music. Additional position responsibilities include: continued research in candidate’s area of expertise; academic advising; supervising undergraduate research; and service to the college community and to the discipline.

We seek someone with a strong commitment to teaching in a liberal arts setting and who is prepared to teach both introductory courses and advanced courses in their area of expertise. A commitment to working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds is essential.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Musicology or Music History by time of appointment

  • Prior experience teaching courses in music history at the undergraduate level

  • Potential to establish and maintain a program of scholarship in area of expertise

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working and teaching environment

  • Ability to teach seated, remote, and online courses in the discipline and proficiency using state-of-the-art technologies for the classroom

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to teach courses in one of the college’s interdisciplinary programs such as American Studies, Black and Africana Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, or contribute to one of the college’s many interdisciplinary minors.

  • Proficiency with instructional technology—including an LMS such as canvas or Brightspace—and online teaching
