Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent and two years of experience working in a least one of the following industrial/commercial trade craft: Plumbing, Mechanical, HVAC, Structural, Instrumentation/Electronics, Refrigeration, Electronics/Fire Alarms. Must be able to successfully complete the following:

  • Pass a Department of Justice background investigation and Select Agent registration within the first 12 months of employment; and

  • Demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job in a post-offer employment test administered by UTMB Rehab Services.

Job Summary:

Monitors BSL-4 operations (entering and exits) from the biocontainment control room using the camera and building automation systems. Responsible for providing work in the maintenance, certification, and operation on Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3), Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL-3), Enhanced Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3E) and Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) facilities to ensure regulatory compliance.

Job Duties:

  • Proactively maintains all aspects of assigned area of responsibility and communicates with customer and supervisor of action taken.

  • Serves as primary point of contact for customers for all Bio containment Operations.

  • Performs detailed inspections of bio containment equipment for proper operation.

  • Informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems or deficiencies.

  • Starts up, shuts down and adjust equipment or systems in accordance with established operational and safety procedures.

  • Performs preventive maintenance or corrective maintenance tasks as assigned and within timelines. Identifies maintenance needs and performs pro-active repairs before breakdown occurs.

  • Attends and participates in project design, reviews shutdowns, project meetings, final inspections, commissioning, trainings and safety meetings.

  • Performs, if necessary; the decontamination of the Laboratory facilities, HEPA filter Housings, Biosafety Cabinets and/or any specialized equipment used in the laboratories.

  • Participate in disaster/hurricane events as getting the area ready, as part of the of the ride-out team or as part of the recovery team.

  • Participates at the annual certification of Biosafety Level (BSL) 2, 3, and 4 bio containment facilities.

  • Supports area shift coverage, after hours or extended projects as needed.

  • Ensures safe movement of biosafety equipment from one location to another for clients.

  • Provides technical support on the safe use and general operation of the biosafety cabinets, laboratory air filtration systems.

  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

Marginal or Periodic Functions:

  • Performs related duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

EQUIPMENT:

Equipment and tools used in industrial building allied trades. Basic computer skills and ability use and operate hand held electronic communication devices.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:

Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments. May be exposed to such occupational hazards such as communicable diseases and harmful chemicals. Some exposure to weather and physical hazards. Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards and may be required to work in high locations or crawlspaces.

  • Exposure to areas under construction.

  • Usual working conditions found in craft shops and mechanical rooms.

  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions or temperature extremes.

  • Exposure to electrical/mechanical hazards.

  • Proper safety and precaution must be closely observed when operating and repairing specialized equipment and systems.

  • Climb ladders and stairways and work on building rooftops of high elevation.

  • Work in confined spaces such as ceilings, under floor crawlspaces, and manholes.

  • May be required to work extended hours or rotating shifts.

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience.
