The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a qualified Veterinary Technical Lead - Behavior Management to support our contract with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, Maryland.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Serve as a Technical Lead - Behavior Managment and shall coordinate technical support in performing daily behavioral and enrichment work assignments in all containment levels, to include non-containment.

  • Provide technical support and is responsible for participating fully in all aspects of nonhuman primate social housing and enrichment, as well as the small animal enrichment programs. Close visual attention is necessary in most of the work and is the candidate's responsibility to inform the TPOC and veterinarians of abnormalities, changes, etc., in animal conditions.

  • Demonstrate proper work methods and starts work independently.

  • Serve as behavior subject matter expert and provide behavioral technical support to include training proper work methods and initiating behavioral technical support.

  • Ensure that needed equipment and supplies are available, and that needed stock is obtained from various supply locations.

  • Perform tasks along with other personnel and set pace performing non-supervisory behavioral work as the Technical Lead - Behavior Management.

  • Operate medical and research equipment to protect laboratory personnel and other animals from infection by organisms and handling animals by appropriate procedures to protect coworkers from bites and scratches. Inform designated TPOC of any equipment malfunctions or expired certifications.

  • Check work in progress and complete work for compliance with procedures and methods; report observations to TPOC or Branch Chief and supervisor.

  • Assist in reviewing SOPs. Also responsible for developing responses to remarks made during inspections as they pertain to behavioral and enrichment management.

  • Perform standard veterinary procedures without assistance or supervision, to include, but not limited to:

  • surgical site preparation

  • administration of medications or other substances by injection, orally, or topically

  • placing intravenous catheters

  • intubating

  • anesthetizing animals using injectable or gas anesthetics

  • anesthetic monitoring and euthanasia

  • providing assistance in rediographic and surgical procedures

  • collection, storage, and proper submission of blood and other bio samples

  • creating entries in medical records (to include Good laboratory Practices (GLP) - compliant entries)

  • conduct of health checks and physical exams, and performance of handling and restraint of animals.

  • Review behavioral and enrichment schedules, and other technical documents and plans, based on scientific data and veterinarian direction; provide daily oversight with coordination from TPOCs and/or NCOIC of sections.

  • Provide information to supervisor, TPOC, and Branch Chief on status of work, causes of delays, overall work operations, and problems and potential corrective actions.

  • Apply practical knowledge and expertise with animal health (to include behavioral health) care technical skills in resolving technical problems real-time.

  • Synchronize behavioral and enrichment work with colony management, husbandry, and research support operations, plans the work and identifies necessary supplies utilizing animal protocols, SOPs, and other guidance information as available.

  • Provide notice to the TPOC/Lead Animal Health Care Technician, in writing, when any supply item needs to be reordered and provide quotes as needed. Allow lead-time as required so that no shortages in supplies used for animal protocol support shall occur.

  • Coordinate weekly food enrichment requests from multiple sections to provide to the Commissary to meet Commissary's suspense to order the items.

  • Pair macaques, and when possible other nonhuman primate species and pigs in a research setting and prepare reports on singly housed animals as required.

  • Conduct behavior assessments, to include but is not limited to, assessing nonhuman primate pair stability, detailed nonhuman primate assessments, and rabbit and pig assessments as requested.

  • Review and modify SOPs and practices to ensure state of the are social and non-social enrichment is provided to all species at USAMRIID.

  • Perform Behavior and Enrichment in execution of NHP environmental enrichment programs that comply with the Animal Welfare Regulations (9 CFR, as amended) and The Guide (NCRC, 2011 and as revised), as well as other applicable regulations and for other species at USAMRIID.

  • Work independently in handling and performing all behavioral and enrichment procedure for Old and New World NHPs, ferrets, rabbits, pigs, and rodents and perform all basic tasks competently and without supervision.

  • Responsible for various logistical tasks including: receipt, storage, and maintenance of inventories, an accounting for all logistical supplies, reporting discrepancies of receipt immediately to the TPOC, or Chief VMD.

  • Immediately notify the TPOC or Branch Chief of any gross injuries or failur of behavioral interventions so follow-up actions can be initiated.

  • Provide trainign to USMARIID personnel in coordination with the PM, TPOC and Brandh Chief, relative to animal behavior management or health care/technical care.

  • Monitor certificates/maintenance dates on medical equipment and notify the COR/TPOC and medical maintenance personnel in a timely fashion of certifications that are coming due.

  • Upon acceptance into BPRP and authorized by the Division BPRP Approval Authority/Biosafety Division, the contract employee shall enter ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 areas to perform duties and/or personnel supervision, training, and ensure QA/QC regularly unless otherwise restricted by the CMA (Certifying Medical Authority) or the Division BPRP Approval Authority.

  • If required by protocol, learn and operate machinery to conduct blood work, to include but not limited to, hematology, serum chemistry, coagulation profiles at all biocontainment levels in compliance with GLP standards.

  • If required by protocol support, learn and assist with the operation of machinery to conduct aerosol challenge of infectious agents in compliance with GLP standards.

  • If required by protocol support, learn and assist with the operation of machinery to record and interpret telemetry data from devices implanted in research animals in compliance with GLP standards.

  • If required for protocol support, learn and assist with the operation of machinery to perform various imaging modalities (CT, MRI, PET-scan, etc.) in compliance with GLP standards.

  • Clean and decontaminate all working areas and equipment IAW applicable SOP upon completion and applies biological safety procedures in the handling and disposal of animal carcasses, waste, and tissues.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

    REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION :

  • HS Diploma

  • LAT certification or higher level of certification, as defined by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), is required prior to or within six (6) months starting work on this Task Order.

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE :

  • Minimum three (3) years in a research setting, of technical experience with nonhuman primate social housing (Macaques preferred),

  • Proficient in pairing Macaques in a research setting

  • Proficient in assessing pair stability

  • Proficient in performing detailed nonhuman primate behavior assessments.

    DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE :

  • Experience in animal technical care and support for Macaques and African Green monkeys

  • Experience with Good Laboratory Practice experience is required.

    REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE :

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

  • An active Secret clearance is required.

  • Must meet the Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP) requirements in accordance with Army Regulation 190-51, as well as the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) and Select Agent requirements in accordance with Army Regulation 190-17.
