Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Department of Soil and Crop Sciences is focused on education, research, and outreach to solve the world’s most pressing food production issues and crucial matters about Earth, its ecosystems, and their services. Our faculty and staff apply research-based solutions to benefit Colorado and the world. We offer academic programs to prepare students to address national and global crop production, sustainability, and environmental quality challenges such as waste management, water quality, and reclamation of drastically disturbed lands. There are numerous opportunities for students to be involved in cutting edge research related to global food production and ecosystem function and protection.

The Irrigation Innovation Consortium ( IIC ), Colorado State University, advances development and adoption of water and energy efficient tools, technologies, and practices in agricultural irrigation. IIC supports research, training, and demonstration projects at CSU , other land grant universities and locations. Since its founding in 2018, IIC has supported over 45 research projects in the western U.S involving private companies and public entities as collaborative partners.

The IIC received a multi-institution, interdisciplinary grant for research, extension, and engagement titled “Climate Smart Advances in Ag Performance ( CSAAP )”. This project will support and equip producers with tools, strategies, awareness, and improved access to information about how they manage water for agricultural production. The project requires coordination among diverse partners including university researchers, staff, and students; industry partners; producers; state and federal agency staff; and others.

The CSAAP project’s key activities are to: strengthen and support the function and expansion of Master Irrigator (MI) and Testing Ag Performance Solutions ( TAPS ) programs in the High Plains; gather and organize data from these programs to support study and analyses; support the development of interdisciplinary research proposals and science communications involving agronomy, social-behavioral, economics, benchmarking and modeling of greenhouse gas emissions; and, engage with a diverse ag sector community, including the beef and dairy industries, irrigation technology providers, lenders and investors, and state and federal agencies who connect and partner with these programs.

Position Summary

The Project and Communications Manager will support the CSAAP program with the following:

  • Coordinate internal multistate team communications and external communications,

  • Develop outreach materials and manage communications with partners, sponsors and other diverse stakeholders, including technology and ag industry representatives,

  • Organize and manage meetings,

  • Track progress toward project objectives,

  • Guide data management,

  • Write project reports,

  • Manage and organize documents and templates developed and used by our multistate team,

  • Provide support for budgeting and tracking team activities to ensure transparency and accountability,

  • Participate in development and execution of project research, outreach activities, and publications.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Completed B.A./B.S. degree + 3 years professional experience in agricultural, social, economic sciences, communications, or a closely related field.

  • Demonstrated experience managing teams of diverse stakeholders

  • Demonstrated experience managing grant funds and reporting

  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and science communications experience

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the position start date.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; The department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in agricultural, social, economic sciences or a closely related field,

  • Experience working directly with producers and/or ag technology providers,

  • Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following: visual presentation or graphic design, filmmaking, podcasting, website design and/or maintenance,

  • Relevant knowledge of agricultural systems.

  • Advanced communications skills (science translation, graphic design, etc.)

  • Contribute to and help coordinate preparation of publications and reports on the multistate program with other land grant university personnel and other partners

  • Contribute to the development of and communicate via presentations, conferences and other in-person events, website development and social media

  • Lead the development of project results and technical materials to deliver high-quality outreach materials in digital and in print form;

  • Support communications, networking, and necessary follow-up for information delivery to broad audiences via print, digital and social media, to include producers, irrigation technology providers, commodity groups, state and federal agency staff, water management district leaders, and others.

  • Provide program editorial and information support.
