Description of Work Unit

Adams State University ( ASU ) is a state-supported regional comprehensive university in Alamosa, Colorado in the United States. ASU is Colorado’s premier Hispanic Serving Institution ( HSI ) and is also a Minority Serving Institution ( MSI ) with over 54% of our students representing diverse backgrounds. We have a high percentage of first-generation students with an equally high percentage of students who are Pell eligible. The University offers undergraduate programs in physical and social sciences, kinesiology, fine arts, business and nursing, and specializes in educator curricula in several disciplines. ASU offers graduate degrees in history, art, business ( MBA ), and educator programs, including counselor education; the University has a doctoral (PhD) program in counselor education. The University has an active athletic program, both in participatory sports and in athletics educator training. The Adams State Grizzly athletic teams compete under the auspices of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Adams State University offers a wide variety of bachelor’s degrees across a range of disciplines in science and mathematics. With funding from three Department of Education grants and support from Colorado State University ( CSU ) and ASU leadership, a CSU -branded, accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering is being made available on ASU’s campus in Alamosa. ASU will provide all lower division (100 and 200-level) courses and CSU’s Department of Mechanical Engineering will provide all upper division (300 and 400-level) courses on the ASU campus in Alamosa. These upper division courses will be taught by CSU Department of Mechanical Engineering faculty who will be permanently located in Alamosa. Located in the beautiful San Luis Valley between the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan mountain ranges, Adams State University is at 7,500 feet in elevation in the largest alpine valley in the United States. Alamosa is located approximately 3.5 hours from Denver, 1.5 hours from Taos, New Mexico, and 2.5 hours from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Alamosa has a population of 9,500, with recently built elementary schools, a moderate cost of living, and affordable housing. ASU takes a leading role in local theatre performances and musical events and is in an area where the opportunities for outdoor recreation abound.

Position Summary

We invite applications for a full-time Instructor / Professor – Mechanical Engineering who will teach upper division (300 and 400-level) courses, which may include Engineering Design III ( MECH 301), Thermodynamics ( MECH 337), Fluid Mechanics for Mechanical Engineers ( MECH 342), Heat & Mass Transfer ( MECH 344), and Engineering Design Practicum ( MECH 486). We are seeking an energetic and enthusiastic individual who loves teaching and shares our dedication to excellence in undergraduate education.

The individual selected for this position will be assigned one of six Non-Tenure Track Faculty ( NTTF ) working titles based on education and experience. Specifically, a selected individual who has an MS will have a working title of Instructor, Senior Instructor, or Master Instructor; a selected individual who has a PhD will have a working title of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. Within these two working titles, a selected individual who has less than 5 years of experience will have a working title of Instructor or Assistant Professor; a selected individual who has more than 5 years of experience will have a working title of Senior Instructor or Associate Professor; a selected individual who has more than 10 years of experience will have a working title of Master Instructor or [Full] Professor.

This position supports the educational mission of the Department and its commitment to provide high-quality opportunities in Mechanical Engineering. The position will report to the CSU Mechanical Engineering Department Head on a continuing contract, pending successful performance and available funding. This faculty position may be given responsibility for one or more undergraduate laboratories and will be responsible for the quality, efficacy, and learning outcomes of courses along with necessary modification and change consistent with the Department’s goals.

Required Job Qualifications

  • An MS (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field by the desired start date;

  • Previous research, teaching, and /or industrial experience related to thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, or heat transfer;

  • Demonstrated excellence in communication, mentoring, and organization;

  • Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in Engineering; and

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not sponsor a visa for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field by the desired start date;

  • Previous research, teaching, and /or industrial experience related to design; and

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness.
