Under the direction of the Shift Lead, the Vehicle Tech A at SouthWest Transit independently performs advanced levels of thorough and efficient preventive maintenance and advanced levels of diagnostics and repairs on SWT fleet vehicles. The Vehicle Tech A performs internal engine and transmission repairs that are within the capabilities of the department. They recommend required repairs or if replacement of parts is needed. They make recommendations as to the need to acquire parts or send equipment for outside repair work based on facility capabilities and workload. The Vehicle Tech A is responsible for the quality and proficiency of assigned work. *NOTE: This position is for the second shift (roughly 1:30pm-10:00pm) *NOTE: Resumes may be reviewed as they are submitted. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Demonstrate the ability to perform the most advanced diagnoses and repairs on the vehicle chassis, drive train, components, and systems, including gas and diesel engines, hydraulic and air brake systems, safely and proficiently. - Perform road tests of equipment following preventative maintenance or repair work to ensure that repair is completed correctly and that the vehicle is safe to operate when necessary. - Report to the Vehicle Maintenance Manager when repairs are covered by warranty or are of a nature that requires the use of outside vendors to perform the repairs. - Possess the ability to safely and properly use and care for all diagnostic and repair equipment, including all welding and cutting equipment. - Refer to and understand vehicle manuals and schematics to aid in failure diagnoses and repair of vehicle systems and components. Possess skills necessary to weld and cut various metals properly. Perform or direct the work of lower-level technicians in performing preventive maintenance inspections per the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) preventive maintenance schedules, resulting in safe operating vehicles. - Perform and provide direction and training to lower-level technicians, apprentices, and maintenance utility workers for all vehicle preventative maintenance, lubrication, and fluid replacement per the OEM schedule. - Perform and provide direction and raining to lower-level technicians and apprentices of more advanced diagnostics to determine the cause of mechanical or electrical vehicle malfunctions and determine the appropriate repair procedure. - Inspect work performed by lower-level technicians and apprentices to ensure proper completion and that systems function properly. Releases equipment for service after being satisfied that the equipment is safe and ready for use. - Perform all tasks of lower-level technicians as required or directed. - Provide vehicle systems use training to bus operators. Respond to roadside breakdown situations, perform repairs, and/or provide a replacement vehicle as necessary. Coordinates field repairs as required using outside vendors if necessary and determines whether vehicles require a tow or are safe to drive. - Assist in clearing accident scenes, ensuring passenger safety as requested by management. Proficient in the use of Vehicle Maintenance Software (VMS) to properly record tasks performed, parts used, labor time, and proper identification of repair reason (i.e., warranty, accident, rework, road call, etc.). Perform shop housekeeping tasks, ensuring all equipment is safely and securely stored and the work area is kept clean and organized. - Follow all OSHA, EPA, MPCA, and shop safety rules in performing all work tasks. - Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as foot protection, eye & hand protection, or as required for the task being performed. Make suggestions to the Vehicle Maintenance Manager to develop recommendations for major equipment repairs, replacement, repair procedures, and repair parts and supply needs. Drive vehicles within the repair facility and shuttle replacement vehicles to the field or as directed by management. Performs Vehicle Maintenance Shift Lead Person duties when requested by management or in the absence of the Shift lead. Such duties include assigning PMI, driver reported failures, and general repair tasks to shop personnel, communicating with vehicle dispatcher to coordinate vehicles in need of repair or inspection, answering the shop phone, coordinating road call response and repairs required to be performed by outside vendor, updating and preparing workload communications for the following shift. Ensures professional working relationships are maintained among SWT staff, SWT contracted staff, and with outside vendors. Possess and maintain Automotive Service Excellence, establishing a Master Technician status. or equivalent as determined by SWT management. Other duties as assigned.
