Primary Responsibilities:

• Provide legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks, and privileges of the organization

• Protect the organization's rights in contract negotiations, settlements, and litigation

• Acquire deep knowledge of the industry and our businesses so as to best advise senior business leaders

• Manage all aspects of affirmative and defensive litigation and arbitrations involving the company; provide legal counsel in connection with internal investigations and responses to government inquiries; provide legal advice on complex and sensitive matters regarding various laws and regulations applicable to health care; help establish and implement creative and strategic initiatives that support the company’s internal and external stakeholders

Required Qualifications:

• Juris Doctorate degree

• 5+ years of combined legal experience with a law firm, in-house legal department, or government office

• Experience managing investigations, responding to investigations, and drafting complaints, demands, and discovery responses in courts and arbitration forums

• Experience managing complex civil cases for plaintiffs and defendants in federal and state courts, including class action or multidistrict litigation matters

• Experience as trial counsel in federal and state courts or arbitration proceedings

• Knowledge of health care and/or regulatory law

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience interacting with regulatory and law enforcement agencies

• Significant trial, arbitration, and negotiation experience

• Work as an Assistant United States Attorney, an Assistant Attorney General in a state Attorney General’s office, an attorney at the Department of Justice, and/or an attorney with HHS

• Understanding of health care benefit coverage and medical policy development

• Understanding of business problems related to assigned legal projects

• Solid understanding of health insurance and/or managed care industry

• Solid understanding of business, accounting, and finance topics

• Familiarity with the False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, state consumer protection and deceptive trade practices laws, Stark Law, HIPAA, ERISA, and various other healthcare laws and regulations, as well as Medicare, Medicaid and

• commercial insurance plans

• Familiarity with other federal and state enforcement provisions such as antitrust and securities laws

• Proven well-developed written and verbal communications skills

• Proven excellent presentation skills

• Proven success in collaborating across a matrixed business and legal environment

• Proven ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal course of action to meet business unit needs

• Proven ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external company contacts

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
