Position Summary

MSU’s Center for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL) seeks a self-motivated individual to serve as a program assistant with a focus on communications, marketing and events. CCEL’s mission is to advance community engaged learning at Michigan State University and prepare students for lifelong civic and social responsibility. CCEL aims to enhance their experience by providing a variety of experiential learning opportunities that meet their passions and schedules.

Reports to:Assistant Director, Center for Community Engaged Learning

Special notes:This position will report in-person; may require some evenings and weekends.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Edits and proofreads materials, researches and composes articles, develops printing specifications, oversees production schedules and provides clerical support in order to facilitate the production and distribution of marketing materials.

  • Designs, produces and distributes publicity materials about the center's activities.

  • Creates content for and manages the Center’s website and social media accounts

  • Controls the promotional inventory for the center. Coordinates the distribution of materials.

  • Coordinate and track Center’s promotional events and calendar

  • Staff tabling events for the Center/MSU

  • Provide back-up to front office support for the center as needed

  • Interacts with students and student groups to plan, oversee, and coordinate. programmatic activities, resolve problems, and encourage participation.

  • Acts as a liaison with faculty, staff, administrators, and community partner organizations to coordinate programmatic activities.

  • Designs and develops informational, public relations, and related materials for distribution to target audiences.

  • Sets up and navigates content management systems, serving as the designated person within CCEL related to a variety of technology platforms and software.

  • Supports events, including planning, logistics, outreach, and promotion.

  • Provides oversight to student employees, and preps materials for hiring, training, and monitoring of undergrad assistants.

  • Gathers and incorporates community partner, student, faculty, and staff feedback and makes recommendations regarding communications.

Social Media

  • Assist with the design and execution of social media campaigns, including

  • Tracking social media engagement to identify high-performing ideas and campaigns for scalability

  • Responding to comments and DMs on social media platforms

  • Brainstorming and researching ideas for original content to create compelling graphics to share across social channels

  • Write social media captions that speak to the company’s target audience

  • Ensure brand message is consistent

Marketing/Events:

  • Assist in maintaining lists

  • Newsletter creation and distribution

General:

  • Contributes to diversity, equity, inclusion goals and implementation strategies.

  • Provides back-up administrative support for the unit, including welcome desk, correspondence, organization, and other duties as assigned or appropriate.

  • Participates in office, unit and divisional meetings and projects as assigned or appropriate.

  • Provide back-up secretarial support for the center as directed

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in Social Science, Education, Business, Liberal Arts, or related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive experience working with college students and programming or similar related volunteer activities; experience with word processing, database, desktop publishing, web page design and maintenance software; may require bilingual abilities in a specific language; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

An ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to research and synthesize information.

  • Have basic graphic design skills (Adobe, Canva)

  • Have experience with a variety of social media platforms

  • Have experience with event support

  • Have prior experience working with college students

  • Interest and experience in volunteerism and service and a desire to grow their knowledge of community engaged learning, quality volunteerism, systems within higher education, and campus-community partnerships.

  • Demonstrated competence in using technology including social media platforms, Canva or other graphic programs, MS Office Suite, and Google Suite

  • Experience with staffing events.

  • Desire to think and contribute creatively to project development and support.

  • Interest in working independently, as well as collaboratively with a team.

  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to research and synthesize information.

  • A high degree of flexibility and responsiveness, a strong work ethic, excellent written and spoken communication, highly organized, and superb attention to detail.

Work Hours

Monday-Friday 8-5pm. May negotiate the 4 hours off each week.
