Michigan State University(MSU) Specialist - Advisor-Fixed Term in East Lansing, Michigan

The MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) is seeking applicants for a full time Academic Advisor/Learning Specialist position. This position will work with the MSUCOM Office of Academic and Career Advising and works to serve osteopathic medical students throughout the 4-year D.O. curriculum. Located in East Lansing (EL) campus, this position will provide academic support and resources to medical students at all three MSUCOM campuses (East Lansing, Detroit Medical Center, and Macomb University Center), as well as those completing clinical rotations at 23 base hospitals across the state. Anticipated travel is minimal and student advising sessions that are not located at selected home site would take place via Zoom. Advising services will be offered through a combination of in-person, zoom, email, and phone interactions.

Weekly Schedule: We utilize a hybrid schedule consistently of 3 in-office days and 2 remote workdays.

Fixed Term explanation: Fixed term is a categorization process for personnel utilized by Michigan State University. Please note, this position is expected to be renewed annually.

Key responsibilities of the Specialist position include the following:

  • Provide one-on-one, individualized student advisement and coaching for improved academic performance, such as developing effective learning strategies, self-regulatory behaviors, time management skills, and test-taking skills
  • Assess student learning preferences and existing study skills
  • Assist students in developing study plans intended for course exams, board exams, and remedial exams
  • Make referrals as appropriate, especially to mental health wellness counselors for students with personal, emotional, behavioral, or family issues, and to disability resources staff for students with disabilities
  • Develop and deliver group presentations/seminars relevant to academic success, self-directed learning, and evidence-based study strategies.

     

Performance of the job will entail becoming familiar with the curriculum and its policies and procedures. The specialist will maintain a regular schedule of availability to meet with students as needed. The specialist will balance defined processes with an individualized approach to help students identify performance obstacles and develop strategies to improve their learning outcomes and monitor student performance and initiate contact with students experiencing academic difficulty. Collaboration with course faculty, administration, and Personal Counseling/Health Promotion is expected. Additionally, the specialist will assist with the creation of academic support initiatives; promoting student awareness of available resources and avenues of support; documenting advising sessions; participating in assigned meetings; and other duties as assigned.

Required Degree

Masters -Education or relevant field

Minimum Requirements
  • The successful candidate must have at minimum a master's degree in education or relevant field.
  • Experience in working with adult learners.
Desired Qualifications

Experience in working with professional students and/or in an academic healthcare setting. Knowledge of adult learning, learning theory, and cognitive development.
