Clean Harbors Facility Assistant General Man in East Chicago, Indiana

We are seeking a dynamic leader for our Assistant Facility General Manager in East Chicago, IN . You support upper management in leading and managing the operations of our used oil refinery. This role ensures efficient, safe, and compliant facility operations while optimizing labor, financial performance, and regulatory compliance. The role is a key succession planning position for future General Manager opportunities within Clean Harbors.

  • Oversee re-refining of oil, ensuring safe operations for inbound and outbound shipments, oil refinery processes, and bulk blending facility operations.

  • Manage labor to align operating costs with budgeted and projected revenue, including hiring, performance appraisals, and overtime management.

  • Maintain and enhance union labor relations, ensuring effective communication and workplace harmony.

  • Ensure compliance with corporate and facility-specific Health & Safety protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Co-chair Facility Health & Safety meetings and drive a safety-first culture.

  • Oversee compliance with all regulatory requirements, including Part B RCRA permits, ensuring adherence to environmental and industry standards.

  • Lead budgeting efforts, manage P&L statements, and optimize cost controls for labor, materials, supplies, and SG&A expenses.

  • Develop and mentor plant employees, fostering leadership growth and operational excellence.

  • Oversee preventive maintenance systems and ensure facilities remain clean and presentable for customer audits and tours.

  • Engage in cross-functional meetings and operational planning, including sales and capital investment discussions.

  • Act as an emergency coordinator in urgent situations, ensuring swift response to safety or operational issues.

What does it take to work at Safety-Kleen?

  • HS Diploma or equivalent

  • Bachelor Degree preferred

  • 3-4 years of management experience working with a union workforce preferred

  • 6-8 years of plant operations experience

  • 7-10 years in a heavy industrial environment (refinery or Petro-Chemical preferred)

  • 3-4 years of experience with environmental statutes and regulations

  • Knowledge of Clean Harbors' policies, procedures, and systems is an asset

  • Ability to lead a team of cross-departmental direct reports

  • Safety-first leadership style with the ability to motivate and influence teams

  • Strong problem-solving skills related to plant operations, equipment, supply chain, and personnel management

  • Ability to set and measure KPIs

  • Experience with P&L management and expense control is a plus

  • Refinery or hazardous waste industry experience preferred

  • Ability to be on-call and act as an emergency site coordinator when required

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and negotiation skills

  • Computer proficiency and ability to adapt to operational software systems
