Southern Company Intern - Manufacturing Engineer in Durham, North Carolina

Job Summary:

The primary duties of the DI Manufacturing Engineering Intern are to improve industrial manufacturing processes in order to ensure safety, minimize waste, optimize throughput, reduce cost, improve sustainability and maximize profitability.

With a view to ever-improving customer satisfaction and responsiveness, this individual will be responsible for supporting process design, optimization, documentation and implementation within the Distributed Infrastructure manufacturing operations. The role Includes input into product development with the purpose of improving manufacturability of products.

Core Position Responsibilities:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Aid in the development and documentation of manufacturing process routings for existing processes

  • Assist in the development, input and validation of manufacturing Bills of Material and process Routings in the ERP system

  • Develop best practices, routines and work instructions for ERP users in the area of manufacturing data management (BOM, Routing, Part Master, Quality Control Plans)

  • Design, run, test, document and upgrade systems and processes

  • Manage cost and time constraints

  • Perform risk assessments

Core Position Requirements:

  • Must be self-directed and able to take on projects independently or within a team

  • Ability to document processes and effectively communicate across several levels of the organization from shop floor operators to upper management

  • Basic to intermediate 3D CAD or AutoCAD skills required

  • Experience using CAM software is desired

  • Experience with ERP software is plus

  • LEAN/Six Sigma experience is a plus

    Additional Position Requirements:

Occasional overnight travel may be required for training or other needs

Frequent travel within 200 miles is possible

Moving materials and equipment that weigh 40lbs

Manual dexterity to operate digital equipment, including computers and machine controllers.

Exposure to and requirement to work on or around industrial equipment including switchgear/switchboards, Diesel and Gas generators, outdoors, around metal welding, forming, cutting and other industrial processes.

Qualifications:

  • Student or recent graduate with BS/MS degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar

  • Legally authorized to work in the US on an on-going basis without company sponsorship

  • Valid driver’s license
