Laborers are valued members of District 1’s maintenance teams and to MnDOT’s summer operations. Day to day work isn’t limited to but may include:

  • Assisting in maintaining the roadway surfaces and shoulders

  • Debris removal from roadways, right-of-ways and roadsides

  • Assist with traffic control in high volume traffic settings

  • Road side mowing, trimming and landscape maintenance

  • Assist with installation and repair of signs and guardrails

  • Assist in bridge maintenance activities

  • This position performs work under close supervision

Positions in bridge maintenance will assist with performing daily routine work assignments following established procedures for bridge maintenance and other related structures. Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Performing bridge maintenance and such as bridge flushing, concrete repair, deck crack sealing, pouring joint replacement/repair, and spot painting

  • Transferring and operating heavy equipment

  • Traffic control, flagging & standing for extended periods

  • Position requires horizontal, vertical and overhead work of the following: jackhammer work (35-85 pound hammers), mixing and placing concrete, concrete removal

  • Work is done in high traffic areas

Positions in Construction will assist the inspection team with daily routine work assignments following established procedures and project compliance standards. Day to day work for laborers in construction isn’t limited to but may include:

  • Assisting in performing routine documentation to record location, quantity and quality of contract work

  • Assisting in the inspection team to perform frequent/routine field testing of construction materials (grading and base, bituminous, and concrete, for example)

  • Assisting in analyzing test results, verifies material quality, reports known deficiencies to Chief Inspector and verifies corrections of known deficiencies

  • Assists the inspection team on complex multi-operational projects, reporting to and working under the guidance of a project engineer/principal engineer and chief inspector to ensure successful completion of projects

  • Assists the Plant Monitor to ensure materials meet specifications and requirements

Locations may include the following work areas in District 1 (Northeastern MN):

Truck Stations: McGregor, Floodwood, Grand Rapids, Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Grand Marais, International Falls, Cook, Pine City, Carlton, Moose Lake, Pine City, & Sandstone

Traffic Services: Duluth (Pike Lake) & Virginia

Bridge Maintenance: Virginia

Construction: Duluth

These positions are anticipated to run from approximately April 23, 2025 - October 07, 2025.

Regular summer hours for these positions are 6:30 am - 5:00 pm, Monday through Thursday.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have written and oral communication skills sufficient to keep records and read and interpret directions.

  • Must have the ability to learn the knowledge of heavy equipment, capabilities, and uses.

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

  • The position requires a valid Class D Driver's License at the time of application. Please include this information in your application or resume when applying.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this job will vary but typically requires the ability to lift 100 pounds maximum with frequent moving and/or lifting or otherwise transfer of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or moving or standing or sitting to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous physical labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing. May require frequent exposure to weather elements year-round (cold and hot) on a daily basis as well as working near traffic and heavy construction equipment.
