Animal Rescue League of Iowa Benefits and Payroll Specialist in Des Moines, Iowa

Title: Benefits & Payroll Specialist - Full Time

FLSA Status: Exempt

Department: Human Resources

Reports to: Director of Human Resources

Responsibilities:

  • Administer ARL leave programs, including Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), long-term disability, workers’ compensation leaves, and personal leaves of absence.

  • Provide guidance to employees and supervisors on leave options and company policies.

  • Review and process leave requests, track usage, and communicate with employees and supervisors regarding leave statuses.

  • Maintain accurate records of leave balances and ensure proper pay adjustments take place as part of payroll.

  • Review timecards to ensure accuracy, resolving discrepancies, as needed.

  • Manage the end-to-end payroll process, including processing bi-weekly payroll, reconciliation, and ensuring payroll deadlines are met.

  • Administer the workers’ compensation program, including claims reporting, case management, and tracking of employee status while acting as a liaison between employees, third-party administrators, and supervisors, when appropriate.

  • Assist in return-to-work programs and accommodations process.

  • Oversee the administration of employee benefit programs and serve as the main point of contact for employees regarding benefits.

  • Conduct benefit orientations in collaboration with the Talent Acquisition Specialist and provide ongoing education to employees on their benefit options.

  • Reconcile benefit premiums with bi-weekly payrolls.

  • Manage open enrollment periods, including communication, education, and assisting with the enrollment process.

  • Lead the Safety Committee and administer the injury reporting process.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations such as ERISA, HIPAA, ACA, and other federal and state laws.

  • Assist with various Human Resources projects, as assigned.

    Education and/or Experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a similar field or equivalent work experience

  • 3 years of professional work experience in Human Resources, highly preferred

  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP, preferred

    Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to create and implement sourcing strategies for recruitment for a variety of roles.

  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.

  • Proficient with ADP’s Recruitment Applicant Tracking System or ability to learn quickly.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite or related software.

  • Familiar with laws, regulations, and best practices applicable to employment law.
