University Of Denver Benefits Specialist, Human Resources & Inclusive Community in Denver, Colorado

The Human Resources & Inclusive Community division is responsible for developing and delivering a broad range of services in support of the University's mission, vision and strategies. HRIC is evolving from a traditional operational and service orientation into a highly effective strategic unit advancing the broader strategic initiatives of the University. This role serves as part of the University's Human Resources & Inclusive Community team, reporting to the Benefits Program Manager.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for performing a variety of complex and technical duties in the administration of the University's Employee Benefits Program.

The Benefits Specialist maintains frequent contact with employees, retirees, payroll and human resources personnel, benefits carriers and third-party administrators.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with the day-to-day administration of the benefits programs including medical, dental, vision, life, disability, tuition waiver and retirement.
  • Assists employees and retirees with benefit related matters, arranges and conducts information presentations including new hire benefits orientation, coordinates open enrollment activities and other benefits related events.
  • Provides information and guidance to help employees strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the University's benefits and retirement plans and programs.
  • Administers all benefit plans according to the applicable policies, plan documents and regulatory requirements.
  • Processes benefit enrollments, changes and terminations timely including new hire enrollment elections, qualifying life event changes, and other changes that may occur outside of the annual open enrollment period.
  • Processes and coordinates payroll deductions timely and makes corrections and adjustments as necessary.
  • Ensures the accuracy of all benefits enrollments in the HRIS to provide vendors with correct eligibility and coverage information.
  • Reviews carrier reports, enrollment records and payroll deductions to identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of employee benefits programs and procedures
  • Knowledge of policies and laws necessary to process benefit-related documents.
  • Knowledge of HRIS systems
  • Ability to process data and documents in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Ability to audit and reconcile benefits discrepancies.
  • Ability to make basic arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Required Qualifications

  • Associate Degree.

  • Two to four (2-4) years of HR, general administration and/or benefits experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with emphasis on Excel. Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.

  • Two to four (2-4) years of experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience with Banner HRIS.
  • Knowledge of regulations such as: ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, FLSA, FMLA, Medicare. Working Environment
  1. Standard office environment.
  2. Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
  3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
  2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number: The salary grade for the position is 8.

Salary Ran e: The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $60,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.
