Description of Work

This position is stationed in Cumberland County but will work in both Cumberland and Harnett Counties.

The position will function as a lead project inspector conducting independent complex inspections of structure and roadway items for project construction. Position will review safety and environmental related items and will supervise lower-level inspectors performing routine and moderately complex inspections of roadway and structure construction processes and materials to assure compliance with contract agreements, standards, and specifications. Safety toe shoes required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction.

  • Knowledge in understanding contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.

  • Working knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, software, and mathematical functions.

  • Experience in performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications.

  • Working knowledge of pay record book entries and material received reports.

Additional Expectations:

Evaluate and apply engineering judgement to plan interpretation; establish and maintain positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers, contractors, and public. Traverse rough terrain in evaluation highway construction. Apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Accurately maintain daily records of work accomplished. Operate State vehicle. Safety toe shoes required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
