City Forester

Duties: Implements maintenance and forestry maintenance plans for forestry, turf, and vegetation health, including mowing, weed mitigation, cultivating, renovating, planting, trimming, pruning, picking up and removing snow and trash, inspecting and repairing playgrounds, and applying herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides safely throughout the park system.

Assists the Superintendent in leading the management of the City's urban forest. Assess, develop, maintain and report on a City forest management plan. Inventory, inspect/assess, plan, trim, prune, plant, and recommend removal of the City's urban forestry resources. Train on the safe and appropriate management of the City's urban forest. Evaluates and diagnose the urban forest; recommend and implement corrective actions. Consults and contracts for specialty trimming or advice.

Supports and assists the Superintendent by leading a crew on assigned work. Motivates, inspires, and mentors team members on best maintenance and safety practices and encourages them to reach their greatest potential. Is open and approachable, supports team members, and promotes two-way communication and feedback.

Operates and ensures safe and proper operation and maintenance of the division's small and heavy equipment resources. Assists the Superintendent in providing regular operational and safety training. Maintains proper documentation and record keeping.

Assists the Superintendent with the repair and/or construction of facilities, including the repair of shelters, playgrounds, picnic tables, barbecues, fences, and other related park equipment and facilities.

Tactfully engages with the public in the field and through citizen's committees. Leads the annual Arbor Day event. Review and makes recommendations for planning and code-related issues.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements: Must be able to direct and supervise small crews in completing assigned maintenance tasks. Work under adverse conditions for extended periods, including at heights, in a bucket truck, in tree canopies, dirt, noise, rain, and snow. Ability to operate and train employees on the safe and proper use and care, and maintenance of a variety of equipment, including tractors, backhoes, front-end loaders, and trenchers, as well as other small power equipment such as mowers, edgers, weed whips, blowers, pumps and miscellaneous landscape related hand tools. Knowledge of the standards required for preparing and maintaining parks and athletic facilities. Knowledge of traffic control standards and safe operation within the right-of-way. Ability to perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of all City Parks. Extensive knowledge and experience in developing and implementing an urban forestry plan.

Other Requirements: One-year parks/golf course maintenance experience. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months of employment. Possession of or ability to obtain a Colorado Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator license. Possession of or ability to obtain a Sawyer (or similar) and Arborist Certification within six months of employment. Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

Wage: S17.90-$27.94

Shifts: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week. May be required to work overtime, weekends, and holidays when assigned.
