Job Summary:
The Tool and Die Maker executes daily tasks related to tooling fabrication for Needle Manufacturing in an FDA-regulated environment. Typical tasks include reading prints, setup and grinding tooling on auto and manual grinding machines, setup and managing tooling production on EDM machines, preventive maintenance to grinding and EDM equipment including the troubleshooting and repair of components, fluid, filter and EDM wire changes.
Responsibilities:
Operate all portable power tools and hand tools, drills, wrenches, grinders, and other miscellaneous Machine Shop / Tool and Die equipment
As a member of a self-managed team, support the needle making operations in tooling fabrication, and grinding needs as required
Form grinding of complex tooling angles and shapes, surface grinding, utilize complex machine setups to achieve desired tooling specifications, read and work from detailed tooling prints, finish tooling to a tolerance of ± .0001, create desired tooling finishes by means of multiple tooling finishing techniques, use of optical comparator for tooling inspections, performs routine equipment maintenance to maintain tolerance standards, chooses appropriate machine accessories for material being worked, works on carbide and other exotic metal types with specialized equipment provided, general machine shop work, keeps equipment clean and in safe working condition, participates and supports self-directed work team activities, and tooling inspection
Use basic metal working principles to properly diagnose problems and implement corrective actions as needed to support manufacturing operations
Work with limited direction to effectively manage workload as assigned by facilitator in a timely manner
Manage deadlines in completing tooling orders
Make critical decisions under pressure
Participate in and work with a production team environment. Receive direction from team members as well as production/engineering supervisor/facilitator
Participate in multidisciplinary project teams to identify tooling requirements for new or existing systems
Support in plant OEE/OSE (Overall Equipment/System Effectiveness) initiatives
Use and maintain Ethicon’s inspection and measurement devices as needed to perform setups and maintain production tooling and tooling inspections
Perform other work-related duties as assigned by supervisor/facilitator
Determine necessary tools and material requirements for specific assignments
Adhere to FDA quality and worldwide quality standards
Take responsibility to ensure spare part tooling is available to maintain equipment in proper running condition
Perform work in a safe manner, as well as, keeping toolroom equipment clean and in safe working condition
Follow current compliance regulations and standards
Comply with all federal regulated programs
Support Plant Diversity Process
Ensure safe working conditions and practices in the department
Support manufacturing in the day-to-day troubleshooting situations to maximize production equipment uptime
Interface with appropriate manufacturing representatives to ensure manufacturing operations and projects receive effective technical support
Support 6S Program (Safety, Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain)
Internal and external tooling inspection
Qualifications
A minimum of a Vocational, Certificate, Technical or Associates degree required
A minimum of four years of work-related experience is required or 2 years technical school diploma for tool and die.
Ability to perform essential functions such as close tolerance inspection (± .0001) and accurate record keeping required
Working knowledge of all tool room equipment, good written/oral communication, work from sketches or prints, and good manual dexterity required
Computer skills required
Excellent communication and interpersonal relation skills required
Organizational skills to balance workload and priorities required
Mathematical and mechanical aptitude skills required
Self-motivated and capable taking a lead position in completing duties required
Self-directed and capable of determining needed resources in completing tasks with little or no supervision required
Basic knowledge of EDM Machines preferred
Basic knowledge of Grinding Machines preferred
Basic knowledge in machine language (g-code, Esprit, MasterCAM, etc.) preferred
Basic knowledge in CAD (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, etc.) preferred
