Abbott Ireland Nutrition Division Cootehill Cavan

Abbott Nutrition produces a range of infant formulae in all pack sizes under the brand name “Similac”. To complement the range of “Similac” infant formulae, the facility also manufactures a range of follow on formulae under the brand name of “Gain”. The essential ingredient is liquid skim milk and this is combined with carbohydrate, vegetable oils, vitamins and minerals. The product is blended, pasteurised, dried and packaged at the site and once packaged, is distributed to Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Canada.

Established in 1975, Abbott Nutrition in Ireland is the largest powder manufacturing facility for the production of infant formulae within the Abbott Corporation worldwide. Approximately 1,000 dairy farms in Ireland and Northern Ireland supply quality milk to the Cootehill facility which processes 500,000 litres per day. This secure supply together with Ireland’s reputation as a green, clean environment is of significant strategic importance to Abbott Nutrition.

Primary Function

  • Follow all Health and Safety Rules and Regulations in the plant.

  • Report any current or potential hazards to your manager immediately.

  • Wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E) at all times. Consult the appropriate SOP where required.

  • Responsibility for reviewing all SOP’s for any job task he/she may carry out and ensure he/she fully understands and adheres to the SOP.

  • Maintain plant safety at the highest level with a zero accident target and with immediate response and thorough investigation and corrective action for all hazardous occurrences and accidents.

  • Constantly work to improve the compliance culture with respect to quality, housekeeping, cGMP and food safety requirements, utilizing plant systems such as CAPA and Teamcentre.

  • Minimize environmental risks to ensure no adverse environmental impact, with immediate and appropriate response and thorough investigation for all environmental incidents.

  • Provide leadership, direction and co-ordination to the Process Shift.

  • Monitor cGMP, hygiene and safety practices within the Process area.

  • Ensure all process equipment is checked regularly to ensure no non-conformances exist and to ensure they are operating in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Monitor performance versus Plan and Update. Take corrective action as necessary in order to meet targets for output, payroll and operating expenses.

  • Assist Process Manufacturing Manager and Planners in preparation of production schedules.

  • Maintain the highest standard of safety, quality, customer service and environmental control ensuring compliance with Abbott policies and procedures, meeting all local, statutory requirements and meeting the regulatory requirements of countries to which are products are shipped.

  • Maintain awareness for the need for ongoing change and continuous improvement. Implement strategies and programs to meet current Process objectives and to meet future growth requirements utilizing business excellence initiatives.

  • Take responsibility for training and development of employees on his/her shift. Ensure all employees achieve their full potential and develop their skills to meet the current and future needs of the Manufacturing Department.

  • Maintain the Compliancewire system.

  • Maintain a positive employee relations atmosphere. Ensure that there is good communication and co-operation by encouraging knowledge sharing and open exchange of ideas within the Plant. Manage process team effectively through coaching and counselling where appropriate lead by example at all times.

  • Maintain good communication lines with other departments e.g. Engineering, Q.A., Materials, Human Resources and Finance.

  • Monitor Process staff time and attendance records of absenteeism, overtime, etc. and respond as appropriate.

  • Ensure the ongoing operations are effectively managed and ensure KPIs are achieved and maintained.

  • Ensure effective implementation of the plant CAPA system. Complete ER’s as necessary.

  • Ensure the Process operation is in compliance with AI policies and procedures.

  • Ensure continued implementation of the Performance Excellence initiative completing all goals, performance reviews and growth plans accordingly.

  • She/he must undertake any special arrangements as directed by the Process Manufacturing Manager.

  • In the absence of senior management members assume responsibility for supervision of all plant operations (inclusive of staff supervision, plant safety, security and compliance with all plant rules and regulations).

  • This Job function will change where update procedures to GMP, EHS, Technical / New Equipment, Quality Procedures & SOP’s are made.

  • This list of responsibilities may change depending on plant needs and employees are expected to be adaptable and flexible were this need arises.

Major Responsibilities

  • Processing, evaporation and drying of products in the Process Department.

  • Produce on a continuous and reliable basis the highest quality infant formula in the most efficient, safe and hygienic manner, in compliance with all company policies and procedures.

  • Training and supervision of all process operators and contractors within the work area.

  • Maintain specified quality standards within the process department.

  • Ensure compliant with all standards and procedures.

  • Attention to detail required for all tasks.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities:

  • Process, dryer, evaporator, ingredient preparation and weighing, milk/oil intake and dumping operators all report directly to the Shift Co-ordinator/Shift Manager.

Education Required:

  • Minimum: Third Level Qualification preferably in a Dairy/Food Science, Business or Engineering related discipline or equivalent.

  • Keen interest in furthering oneself and improving skills, education and knowledge of the business.

Knowledge:

  • One year technical experience preferably in Dairy Food or Pharmaceutical Industry.

  • One years experience in a Supervisory Role.

  • Ability to motivate and direct others.

  • Maturity and ability to control multi-task situations.

  • Good problem solving skills.

  • Ability to evaluate and make decisions in order to achieve the department targets.

Accountability / Scope

  • Deviation from specification or failure to take corrective action or follow procedures for any period of time could have serious financial and quality consequences.

  • Where non-conformances are made in the Process area this can lead to delays to the overall organizational work schedules.
