We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Staff API Software Engineer to join our team. This role is a hands-on technical position. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in software engineering, API development, and integrations, with a passion for coding and full-stack development. A key focus will be enabling enterprise API modernization, working with distributed teams to enable federated API management.

Responsibilities:

  • API Software Engineering: Act as the Technical Lead for the API Enablement Team, providing guidance on API solutions, API Gateway configuration, and administration on platforms such as API Connect, Apigee, Azure API Management, and Amazon API Gateway.

  • Create Innovative API Solutions: Create technical solutions to enable federated teams to accelerate API delivery and enhance experiences for API Providers, API Consumers, and API Administrators. Empower and improve the developer experience (DevEx) for API providers and API consumers by developing shared technology components, API practices, accelerators, and enablers to reduce toil, increase ease, strengthen code quality, enable security, performance, and resiliency.

  • API Governance and Quality: Ensure the scalability, performance, and security of APIs, with a focus on code quality, security, performance, and documentation. Participate in API governance practices, encourage higher quality API code, maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated API governance, and enable automated testing1.

  • Deliver technical solutions with business value and impact: Lead and actively participate in software development and technical leadership, ensuring high-quality delivery. Demonstrate proficiency as a full-stack Software Engineer with the ability to create technical solutions, including coding, automated testing, deployment, SRE, and run. Possess deep knowledge of programming languages (such as Java, Python, etc.), low-code, no-code solutions like Microsoft Power Suite, front-end development (such as React), and architectural patterns. Adapt swiftly to new technologies.

  • API SRE and Incident Management: Drive SRE practices in the context of APIs and integrations, ensuring reliability, availability, and performance. Lead incident management, structured triage, and analysis, including the creation and management of incident runbooks. Participate in 24x7 on-call rotations for incidents and changes, including evenings and weekends.

  • Innovation and POCs: Ideate and execute high-value Proof of Concepts (POCs) to drive innovation and improvement, including leveraging GenAI. Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in API development and integration.

  • Communication, Problem-Solving, and Adaptability: Foster strong communication and collaboration within the team and across departments to ensure seamless integration and delivery of API solutions. Utilize excellent problem-solving skills to address technical challenges and improve API development processes. Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in responding to changing requirements and priorities in API development.

  • Coach, upskill, and uplift team members: Coach other engineering team members and contribute to a positive and engaging culture of excellence and continuous learning.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Columbus, OH, Chicago, IL, Hartford, CT or Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of technical experience, engineering, application management and operations roles with a demonstrated track record of technical innovation and experience leading technically diverse teams. Prior experience in API Technical Lead roles.

API Management and integrations:

  • 3+ years of deep API and integration experience including hands-on expertise with deep experience in API platforms such as API Connect, Apigee, and AWS API Gateway.

  • Deep knowledge of API design principles and best practices, including industry-standard specifications such as Open API (Swagger), JSON, REST, and GraphQL.

  • Extensive experience in API lifecycle management, cloud technology, and microservices architecture. Proven expertise in event-driven architecture, SOA, and service integration buses like IBM DataPower and IBM ACE.

  • Proficient in API security solutions and frameworks, including API token management, user access control using OAuth2 and JWT, OpenID Connect, IAM, Identity Management, authentication, and authorization.

Full Stack Software Engineering:

  • Proficiency as a full-stack Software Engineer with demonstrated ability to drive technical delivery as a technical lead. Demonstrated knowledge programming languages (such as Java, Python, etc), low-code, no-code solutions such as Microsoft Power Suite, front end development (such as React), and architectural patterns. DevOps knowledge.

  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems, cloud computing, and GenAI.

Incident Management and On-call:

  • Expertise in SRE best practices, including incident management, resiliency, monitoring, detection, diagnosis, remediation, and prevention.

  • Experienced in Incident Management, Structured Problem Solving, and SRE. Able to be on rotation for 24x7 on-call for complex issues.

  • Experience with Performance and Observability tools such as Dynatrace, Splunk, CloudWatch, Cloud Trail, and related tools.

Cloud, GenAI, and Innovation:

  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).

  • Demonstrated experience in innovation ideation and Proof of Concepts (POCs) execution.

Coaching, collaboration, and communication:

  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and develop Software Engineers.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a focus on partnership and results.

Candidate must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience in the insurance industry and productization of insurance business capabilities.

  • Experience with Generative AI (GenAI) and Agentic AI.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$126,160 - $189,240
