Responsible for the 24-hour operation of the Nursing Department in accordance with current Federal, State, and other legal and binding standards, guidelines, and regulations. Assumes responsibility for the SNF in the absence of the Administrator.

The Director of Nursing Services shall have administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability for the function and activities of the Skilled Nursing Unit staff. She/He plans, directs, and reviews the work of all nursing personnel in the care and treatment of residents/patients. She/He assumes responsibility in the absence of the Nursing Home Administrator. In the absence of the Director of Nursing Services, responsibility for continuity and supervision of nursing care is delegated to the RN Case Manager or her designee. She/He must be able to recognize the needs of various aged populations and provide age appropriate care as needed.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develops and maintains, for each level of nursing personnel: a. The nursing services philosophy and objectives. b. Standards of practice. c. Policies and procedures manuals. d. Job descriptions.2. Recommends to the Administrator the number and levels of nursing personnel to be employed.3. Manages nursing personnel, which include recruitment, selection, position assignment, orientation, in-service education, supervision, evaluation and termination.4. Participates with other professional staff in developing and implementing policies for resident/patient care.5.. In collaboration with other disciplines assures that each resident’s/patient’s interdisciplinary plan of care, including discharge planning, is ongoing, current and complete.6.. Attends all nursing related meetings, case reviews, and those assigned by the Administrator.

  2. Designs, implements, and evaluates nursing quality assurance tools and submits the results of compilation and desired outcome measures and goals to the Administrator on a timely basis.8. Collaborates with all Interdisciplinary Team members to assure and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local standards and internal policies, procedures, and guidelines.

  3. Interprets state and federal regulations and implements policies and procedures to ensure department understanding and compliance.

  4. Serves as a role model for nursing staff and as a preceptor for high potential nurse managers.11. Identifies training and development needs of the nursing department and coordinates plans for training programs with staff development and other departments as needed or as required.12. Manages and evaluates nursing personnel through on-going performance management, and timely, constructive feedback (i.e. coaching, counseling, written and oral disciplinary action, performance log, anecdotal notes, etc.). 13. Monitors the department’s budget performance and takes appropriate action or makes the appropriate recommendations to ensure the department’s overall compliance with the budget (i.e. daily PPD (per patient day), ancillary usage, material resources, etc.)14. Reviews all Incident/Accident reports, identifies trends, and recommends corrective action to the Administrator and does thorough follow up of all events and documents such follow-up.15. Ensures nursing department compliance with emergency and safety policies, procedures, and guidelines established by all regulatory bodies, and works toward providing efficient and effective nursing care in a safe environment.16. Ensures nursing staff awareness and reporting of potential hazards or unsafe conditions to maintain a safe environment for residents/patients, families and staff.17. Supports and ensures compliance with infection and exposure control guidelines for maintaining and promoting infection and exposure control in all aspects of resident/patient care.18. Ensures nursing staff awareness and compliance with federal and state regulations relative to resident rights issues.19. Ensures that residents/patients are free from abuse, mistreatment, and neglect, and reports any such instances to the Administrator and Social Service Coordinator for follow through with the appropriate governmental agencies.20. Ensures staff is educated and knowledgeable about current nursing practices.21. Attends all educational programs mandated or recommended by the Administrator, and also by state and federal guidelines.22. Conducts nursing in-services that are scheduled and documented at least three times/year, and teaches at these educational sessions through written, education plans and objectives.23.. Interprets appropriate information needed to identify each resident’s/patient’s requirements relative to age-specific needs, and provides the care needed as described in unit or department policies and procedures.24.. Keeps the Administrator informed at all times regarding all Human Resources issues, nursing care problems, material resource issues or administrative related issues.25. May be required to assist in resident/patient care.26. May be required to use a computer, photocopier or other office related equipment.27 Participates in all marketing campaigns.28. Supports the Administrator in all unit and administrative objectives.

  5. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.

  6. Other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Possess effective verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to understand medical charts, physician orders, and to communicate effectively with residents/patients, staff, family and government agency personnel.

Willing to be feasible in adjusting to new and changing situations.

Liking for people and desire to serve ill and aged persons.

Tact in dealing with residents/patients, families, staff, medical staff and public.

Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and squat for prolonged periods. Ability to push and pull objects and lift and carry up to 20 pounds, unassisted (occasionally up to 50 pounds, unassisted). Full use of gross and fine motor skills of the upper and lower extremities.

Applicants will be evaluated through a pre-employment Physical Therapy Back School and Body Mechanic Screen test. Below is a list of the specific tasks and the strength requirements necessary to perform the tasks.

EDUCATION:

  1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred.

  2. Possess a valid and current RN state license.

  3. 2-3 years' experience in a long-term care, a rehabilitate setting or an acute care setting preferred.

  4. 2-3 years of nursing management experience preferred.

  5. Current CPR certification

  6. Current ACLS certified desired

  7. Knowledge of age specific competencies.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Expected to observe all three nursing shifts periodically to ensure good nursing practice.

Potential exposure to infectious disease, odors, incontinence, etc.

May be required to lift and transfer residents/patient up to 200 pounds with one additional staff and the use of assistive devices.

Moderate to large amount of stress at times.
