Case Western Reserve University Research Technician 4 in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under limited supervision, the technician will provide electronic services and hardware support in the form of design, fabrication, installation, repair and maintenance of all equipment for those using the Sally & Larry Sears Undergraduate Design Laboratory. The laboratory is the central educational resource for undergraduate students taking analog, digital, and mixed-signal courses in electronics. Basic workstations consist of Windows based computers, Agilent MSOX-2002A, Keysight MSOX-3014T and MSOX-3024T oscilloscopes, TTI-TG315 Waveform Generators, KI-2000, KI-DMM6500A and HP 34401A Digital Multimeters and E3631A power supplies. Advanced workstations are similarly configured, but with a wider variety of high-performance test equipment. New equipment usage is a continual process and the technician needs to be able to adapt and utilize new and innovative technologies involving a high degree of skill and training. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Setup and maintain lab sections (supplies, components, kits, equipment and tools) for all classes held in the Undergraduate Design Lab for each semester. Consult with management and professionals on projects. (20%)
  2. Conduct regular scheduled maintenance of all equipment (such as, but not limited to, PCs, oscilloscopes, signal generators, logic analyzers, and specialized equipment such as RF analyzers and generators) and perform repairs on equipment as needed. Maintain all equipment inventories (sign out and track) lab equipment. (25%)
  3. Work with the undergraduate design laboratory director in his/her support of the labs being taught that semester. Design and build special lab setups for classes, procure parts for these special projects and build these test fixtures to support these specific labs. Also, maintain (replace consumables) and/or repair these fixtures when they get damaged during normal lab use. (15%)
  4. Procure (with correct billing practices) supplies for faculty, instructors, student groups, and individual student projects as well as for maintenance and repair. Manage purchasing and sales records ¿ meet all requirements for proper PCARD usage. (15%)
  5. Perform the correct soldering procedures when working on equipment (for both PTH and SMT technologies) in the performance of above essential functions. (10%)

     

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Supervise the training and performance of lower level technicians and students. (5%)
  2. Maintain / update the MSDS data base for all chemicals / substances used in the lab. Prepare and monitor own budget (5%)
  3. Perform safety monitoring in the lab and monitor safety devices used in the Undergraduate Design Laboratory.  Instruct students and faculty on proper use of equipment. Modify or develop new procedure and policies. Perform the correct disposal method(s) with facilities for lab equipment and / or waste disposal. (3%)
  4. Serve as building monitor for the Undergraduate Design Laboratory (all areas / rooms). Conduct occasional tours of the laboratory and facilities. (2%)

     

CONTACTS 

Department: Daily contact with the Director of the Undergraduate Design Laboratory in completing Lab-related functions. Regular contact with the department business manager, administrative staff, and other technical staff in completing administrative tasks. 

University: Regular contact with undergraduate student employees to discuss work assignments and evaluate performance of projects. Contact with faculty, researchers, or staff in other university departments needing technical services, equipment repair, parts, or design projects.

External: Occasional contact with equipment and component vendors to secure quotes and negotiate purchases.
