Job Title: Traffic Engineer

Job Description

Seeking a skilled Traffic Engineer to join the team. The ideal candidate will lead and manage traffic and safety projects, providing technical assistance and quality control oversight. You will play a crucial role in preparing various traffic and safety studies, designing traffic signals, and supporting both local and national practice areas. If you are passionate about traffic engineering and enjoy mentoring junior engineers, this role is for you.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Project Manager, Project Lead, or Task Lead in the development of traffic and safety projects.

  • Prepare traffic impact studies, traffic signal warrant studies, intersection design studies, safety studies, bicycle planning, and technical report writing.

  • Develop traffic signal design plans for new and modified intersections, construction sequencing, pavement marking plans, signing plans, and traffic control plans.

  • Provide technical assistance and quality control oversight on traffic engineering studies and design projects managed by other project managers and task leads.

  • Support local and national traffic engineering practice areas.

  • Supervise and mentor junior engineers.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering; Master of Science in Civil Engineering is a plus.

  • 4+ years of relevant experience in traffic engineering, transportation planning, and/or Intelligent Transportation Systems.

  • Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain it within one year.

  • Familiarity with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the Illinois Supplement.

  • Proficiency with SYNCHRO, HCS, SIDRA, VISTRO, and other traffic capacity and analysis software.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Membership in ITE or other professional organizations aligned with traffic engineering is a plus.

  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) or Road Safety Professional 1 (RSP1) certification is a plus.

  • Direct experience with DOT, local county, municipal, and/or developer-driven transportation and traffic projects is preferred.

  • A working knowledge of MicroStation, VISSIM, CORSIM, or other advanced software packages is a plus.

Work Environment

Our work environment offers flexibility with a hybrid schedule for eligible positions, consisting of two days a week in the office, two days a week remotely, and a flexible Friday that can be worked either in the office or at home. The team consists of 9 individuals, including designers and engineers, and the new hire will be trained to become the Traffic Design lead for DOT, Municipal, IDOT, and CDOT projects in the Chicago office.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $43.30 - $48.08/hr.
