University of Virginia Registered Nurse (RN) - Outpatient Surgery Center Operating Room (OPSC - OR) in Charlottesville, Virginia
Capable clinician, focused on expanding knowledge and skills. Consistently provides effective direct care, as part of the interdisciplinary team, to a variety of complex patients. Seeks as well as provides feedback for improved clinical practice. Assumes a beginning leadership role but seeks mentoring in this process.
Operating Room Nurse Skills and Expertise:
Responsible for maintaining sterility and safety standards in the operating room
Able to multi-task while assessing patients quickly, prioritize, and assist in procedures
Anticipate needs of the surgeon and patient
Demonstration of sound decision-making in emergency scenarios based on patient conditions such as vital signs, patient presentation, and assessments
Observe, check and monitor all equipment used during surgery
Conducts patient education regarding surgical procedure
Serves as the communication liaison to family and members of the operating team
Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol
Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
Prepares operating room for patient/procedure
Monitors patient’s physical and emotional well-being throughout the care continuum
Responsible for positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient
Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens
Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery
Selects and handles surgical instrumentation by safely passing instruments to surgeon during the case
Scrubbed in nursing staff is responsible for maintaining the sterile field throughout procedure
Works with the team to ensure all instruments and supplies are available for each case.

Position Compensation Range: $39.90 - $53.00 Hourly
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Graduate of accredited nursing program, Bachelor of Science in Nursing required within 5 years of hire.
Experience: 1 year of nursing experience. Previous OR experience desired. Will train dedicated candidates willing to learn new skills. Orientation for those with no experience lasts 5 to 6 months.
Licensure: Licensed to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
