Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director of Biochemical Research and Operations performs and coordinates the work necessary for research faculty and students to conduct cutting-edge research in biochemistry.

The Director of Biochemical Research and Operations will supervise the use and operation of shared biochemical instrumentation belonging to the Chemistry Department. The Director will be responsible for maintaining the instruments in working order and interacting with the vendors for all repairs, service contracts, and new trainings. The Director will responsible for inventory and ordering of replacement parts and expendables as needed, and for inventory and organization of the instrumentation laboratories. The Director may also be expected to help PIs with the operation, maintenance, funding, and purchasing of biochemical instrumentation belonging to individual research groups within the Chemistry Department.

The Director will train users including teaching and research assistants on instrument use and data analysis, design experiments for instrument users, conduct experiments for researchers and students as needed. The Director may lead proposal submission for major instrumentation, support research proposal writing (experiment design and data analysis), and possibly teach courses in biochemistry, nanobio, or other courses of relevance to the chemistry department.

The Director may supervise, coordinate, or conduct research activities in biosafety labs and work with PIs. The Director may also supervise, coordinate, or conduct research activities in the Vivarium and assist PIs in activities involving live animals.

The Director will be responsible for maintaining safe biochemical operations, including ensuring compliance with biosafety and live animal use regulation, autoclave training and operation, and coordinating with the Biosafety Officer, the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Animal Resources, and other regulatory groups as needed.

Minimum Experience / Education:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Nanoscale Science or closely related field.

  • Minimum two years experience in biochemistry or related laboratory settings.

Preferred Education Skills and Experience:

  • Extensive experience (6-8 years) beyond a doctorate in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Nanoscale Science or closely related field.

  • Experience with operation and maintenance of biochemical instrumentation.

  • Experience working in BSL 1 and/or BSL 2 labs.

  • Experience conducting or the administration of research involving live animals.
