The Director, Coding HB/PB works with the VP HIM Operations and Coding to develop and direct the implementation of programs and services, establish, and maintain relationships with the coding staff, and support the achievement of both the system’s strategic goals and revenue cycle goals in collaboration with other departments, clinical and non-clinical. Works independently to develop and provide direction in support of quality initiatives, as well as other programs to achieve system goals.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  1. Supervises professional/hospital Coding Managers, supervisors, and staff, The Director is also responsible for specialty initiatives, provider education initiatives, and technology advancement.

  2. Monitors departmental performance about established goals and standards as well as development, implementation, and adherence of new policies and procedures as indicated to continually improve operational efficiencies and the quality of the services provided.

  3. Develops, implements, and assures adherence to new policies and procedures as needed to meet regulatory requirements for coding compliance.

  4. A mentor for departmental managers/supervisors to properly follow personnel policies and procedures in conjunction with hiring, training, discipline, discharge, and evaluation of coding department staff. Monitors workflows, schedules, education, mentoring, and staffing to ensure effective use of personnel.

  5. Develops, implements, and monitors statistical reporting for senior management, clinical departments, and coding departments, as well as other revenue cycle related areas. Develops and monitors key performance indicators for all department goals, including timeliness and accuracy of all coding, adherence to policies and procedures, internal and external audits, and internal and external contracted work.

  6. Plans, implements and monitors process improvement initiatives and technical solutions while meeting organizational as well as departmental missions and goals.

  7. Develop, monitor, and manage the budget(s) and use of resources effectively to provide high-quality, cost-effective service.

  8. Works collaboratively to solve problems, improve processes, and integrate services and technical solutions within the department and other BILH departments.

  9. Identifies issues, problems, or areas requiring improvement or resolutions.

  10. Assures training for coding, compliance, and any other training needs including but not limited to mandatory education or any other training or communication for continuing education of coding staff.

  11. Keeps VP apprised of issues, problems, or challenges facing the coding department and works effectively with other departments and or management staff to resolve them.

  12. Attends meetings and interacts with other managers or senior-level management as needed.

  13. Assists the VP and other senior leadership with special projects as needed.

  14. Incorporates BILH Guiding Principles, Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities.

  15. Compliance with BILH Policies.

  16. Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and BILH.

  17. Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.

  18. Demonstrates understanding of the job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.

  19. Demonstrates a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers and consistently adheres to customer service standards.

  20. Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.

  21. Participates in and completes mandatory education.

  22. Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma required.

Associate's or Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Licensure, Certification & Registration: Relevant AHIMA/AAPC Credentials required (or equivalent), i.e. RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CPC, CCS-P, COC, or CCS.

Experience: A minimum of 8 years of leadership experience in revenue cycle operations with a proven track record of improved financial outcomes, building relationships, improving workflows, and successful technology implementations preferably in a healthcare setting.

Key Business Relationships: (Title and Purpose)

1 Senior Administration To support senior management to meet the overall goals of the Coding Department and BILH.

2 Professional/Hospital Coding Staff and Managers To guide, educate, communicate to, and monitor daily activities.

3 Physicians To monitor coder support, educate, and communicate coding related information.

4 Revenue Cycle Teams To represent the Coding department with reporting, feedback, and other duties as necessary.

5 Clinical Managers To collaborate to ensure that the Coding staff is meeting the support needs of the clinical department.

6 Senior Management To represent the Coding department with reporting, feedback, and other duties as necessary.

Physical Requirements & Environment:

· High degree of mental and visual concentration.

· Lifting or moving lightweight (up to 20 lbs.).

· Average dexterity and range of motion.

· Remaining in position for prolonged periods.

· Occasional repetitive motion.
