Description of Job

Colorado Correctional Industries (CCi) is a cash funded, self supporting division of the Colorado Department of Corrections. CCi provides training and education for inmates. CCi provides services to many government and non profit organizations with an emphasis on excellent customer service.

This position is a Canteen Supervisor, Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I). This position ensures the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates. This position prepares inmates for community re-entry by promoting the Colorado Department of Corrections Mission, Vision and Values while adhering to a high level of integrity and commitment.

Safety and Security - This position maintains safety and security of facility; through clear and accurate communication. The position trains and guides staff and inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting searches; monitors workplace environment and offender behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to facility policy and limits offender access to restricted areas; position performs offender counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy and writes and submits required reporting.

Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment.

Inmate Accountability - The position ensures offender workers are trained in work area and ensures timely completion of tasks. Ensures offender evaluations are completed, tracks and calculates offender hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances according to agency policy; reduces offender idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community re-entry. Position holds inmates accountable for attendance and utilizes PCDCIS Chronological Entry to report/track both positive and negative behavior.

Operations - This position ensures the safe, secure, efficient, compliant and cost effective execution of assigned tasks and projects by performing "hands on" instructional work alongside staff and offender crew.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining safety and security of facility and work sites;

  • Promoting a high level of performance by setting a cooperative, team-oriented work standard;

  • Ensuring timely, organized and systematic completion of work orders and projects;

  • Ensuring safe, secure, compliant and cost effective operations;

  • Monitoring and maintaining inventory, documentation, and reporting;

  • Coaching and mentoring staff regarding agency supervision, encouraging a cohesive team, career development, and completion of mandatory training;

  • Training and instructing offenders in the appropriate use of relevant tools, equipment and procedures;

  • Resolve conflict and informal grievances a the lowest level possible;

  • If necessary, physically controlling offenders with the proper use of restraints of 'use of force' techniques.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of employment experience employment experience receiving, issuing, shipping, storage, and maintaining inventory in a government, retail or correctional setting . Your experience must beclearly describedwithin thework experiencesection of your application to be counted toward the minimum qualifications.

Applicant may meet the four (4) year requirement experience with a combination of work experience as follows:

A minimum of two (2) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with correctional experience.

** Correctional experience must be security related duties where primary responsibilities throughout a shift, include monitoring and controlling inmate movement throughout their daily schedules, discovering and preventing contraband and responding to emergencies; ensuring proper key/tool/chemical/equipment control, use, storage and accountability; advising inmates in matters concerning work, programs, appropriate behavior and decision making in order to prepare them for successful community re-entry.

Substitutions:

Completion of formal education at an accredited, non-correspondence trade/vocational school, college or university that resulted in demonstrated competencies equivalent to those gained through the required experience may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. **You must submit a copy of your unofficial transcripts with your name, college name, degree and date conferred in order to receive credit.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a Correctional Environment;

  • Possess a Class A or B CDL driver's license;

  • Two (2) years experience as a CO I, CO II or equivalent/higher classification;

  • Ability to operate a forklift.

  • Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension , relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;

  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;

  • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

  • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;

  • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;

  • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

  • Swing a baton in a striking technique;

  • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;

  • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;

  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;

  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security;

  • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments;

  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;

  • Willing and able to travel;

  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;

  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;

    The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. A drug test will be administered to all new employees; employees must successfully pass. Random drug screening will occur throughout employment.
