Description of Work

Consistent with the Department of Transportation’s commitment to safety, the primary purpose of the Transportation Supervisor I, in Traffic Services includes supervising the work of long line paint crews and signing crews, scheduling paint activities for marking of newly surfaced roads and any pavement marking retracing that is needed. Performs layout of pavement marking on new projects and ensures the pavement markings are installed properly.

Provides technical assistance to others by troubleshooting simple technical problems. Performs daily documentation and job reports completely and accurately. Responsible for issuing and maintaining adequate inventory. Assists in incident management activities.

Requires a working knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), signing and pavement marking design, installation, repair, and replacement of all types of pavement markings, signs, and markers; signing and pavement marking condition evaluations, and inventory control to ensure proper installation, and maintenance of signs and pavement markings. Position will require knowledge of report creation utilizing spreadsheets, databases, web-based production planning (MMS), and budgetary analysis software (SAP). Additional duties include interpreting and applying personnel policies, ability to read and interpret signing and pavement marking plans and standard specifications and drawings, prepare signing and pavement marking plans for in-house use, plan and organize work for self and others by prioritizing activities, evaluating materials and equipment needs, direct, assist and train crew members and operators, determine appropriate level of staff needed for tasks, communicate effectively with other units, the general public, private and governmental agencies, write and organize daily records.

  • Experience with MUTCD Standards and Roadway Specifications in laying out pavement markings including longlines, symbols and characters.

  • Experience working as a Crew Leader on a Special Marking Crew, Long Line Paint Crew, or Signing Crew.

  • Knowledge in Advance Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety practices.

  • Knowledge of SAP, MMS, and other computer applications.

  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
