Job Description
Title: Part-Time Library Clerk I / Childrens Room Circulation
Department: Brooks Memorial Library
Nature of work: Works directly with the public to perform entry level library administrative
support tasks based on policies, procedures and knowledge gained through experience. The
work requires some knowledge, skill, and ability in library support functions.
Work Schedule & Wages: 15 hours per week (some evenings and Saturday) with occasional
additional On-Call hours available. \$17.39 per hour.
Supervision Received: Works under the immediate supervision of the Childrens Librarian. May
substitute comparable duties in the Adult Circulation Department.
Supervision Exercised: None. May be assigned volunteer support.
Essential Responsibilities:
o Charges and discharges library materials, including holds and renewals.
o Registers borrowers and updates borrower records. Explains policies and procedures to
patrons.
o Provides users with information regarding library resources, services, programs, and
policies in addition to other information, in person, on the phone, or online.
o Provides Readers Advisory and first-line reference/referral.
o Contributes to displays and resource lists.
o Maintains order and appearance of shelves.
o Assists with technology equipment and troubleshoots minor problems with printer,
microfilm, and public computers and with downloading media on patron devices.
o Operates cash register.
o Assists with special projects as needed.
o Maintains a safe library environment
Competencies Needed:
o Excellent customer service and communication skills.
o Patience, flexibility and an appreciation for spontaneity.
o Basic knowledge of books and media of interest to public library users.
o Familiarity with the functions, services, and resources of contemporary libraries.

o Proficiency in clerical processes, computer applications, and related technologies. Ability
to troubleshoot printer/copier and provide basic technical assistance to patrons,
including downloading media.
o An understanding of and adherence to policies regarding patron privacy and equal
access to information and materials.
o High school diploma or equivalent required.
o Experience working in a library and /or with children preferred.

Work Environment:
o Requires sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and lifting/moving books, boxes, and carts
up to 40 pounds.
o Must be able to perform varied library work quickly, accurately, and under minimal
supervision.
o Must be able to perform routine administrative support work.
o Must be able to access, retrieve, enter, and update information using a computer.
o Must be able to deal courteously with the public.
o Must be able to work weekends and evenings.
o Must be able to hear, comprehend, and respond to Library patrons both in person and
in phone conversations.
o Must have visual ability to see computer screens.
o Requires ability to operate basic business machinery (computer, printer, copier,
telephone, FAX machine, cash register, laminating machine, and microfilm).
