Boston Public Schools Environmental & Sustainability Project Manager (SY23-24) in Boston, Massachusetts

DIVISION: Operations OFFICE: Central Office - Facilities Management TEAM: Facilities Management REPORTS TO: Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Program Director ACADEMIC/NON-ACADEMIC: Non-academic POSITION OVERVIEW: The Environmental & Sustainability Project Manager resides in the Facilities Management Department within the Operations Division of the Boston Public Schools, and reports to the Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Program Director. The Environmental & Sustainability Project Manager will manage capital, renovation, and operational Environmental Projects, including large scale sustainability, air quality, lead, waste, and energy efficiency projects, to improve BPS building environmental quality and sustainable building features. The Project Manager will: Work with Architects to develop upgrades and renovations in conjunction with systems and building upgrades (HVAC, IAQ, Lead, waste, building materials, etc.); Develop Capital Upgrades and plan for school environmental and sustainability upgrades; Work with the City of Boston Public Facilities Department on similar project scopes as the BPS Sustainability, Energy, and Environment liaison; Manage waste systems related to regulated waste; Help to bring BPS building health up to 21st century standards in coordination with fellow Facilities and Capital Planning project managers as well as City, state, and federal partners on new initiatives; Assist in research, policy development, grant searching, grant writing, and sustainability and environmental communications within the Facilities Management department; Assist with Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Program budget management; Track metrics related to indoor environmental quality and building health, BPS sustainability/Green New Deal for BPS, and KPIs easily referenced by national standards. RESPONSIBILITIES: Foster a culture and practice of sustainability across BPS through ongoing implementation of projects, initiatives, communications, and education. Lead district behavior change and educational campaigns for sustainability, energy, and environment, in partnership with other members of the Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Program, Facilities Management, City of Boston Environment Department, Utility providers, and selected sustainability education partners. Coordinate significant construction and facilities related environmental and sustainability projects: Responsible for the oversight and coordination of projects. Coordinate design with specification writing in preparation for public bids. Maintain relationships with all contractors working with the Facilities Management Department. Provide guidance and expertise on BPS Green Schools Design Guidelines and work with architects and BPS staff developing the BPS Facilities Master Plan to incorporate sustainability requirements. Assess school building needs and execute all necessary reports and filings: Prepare technical reports and analyses as requested. Visit school buildings to determine the extent of building problems and submit recommendations to department engineers, Project Director, and Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Program Director. Monitor ongoing challenges and contribute to development of project plans: Read and interpret existing building plans. Using current technology and communications tools, prepare and maintain a variety of narrative and statistical reports, presentations, records, correspondences, and files related to assigned projects. Manage any budgets and contracts affiliated with assigned initiatives and projects. Write budgets, grant applications, rebate applications, or project proposals to secure funding for assigned initiatives and projects. Participate in staff, school, and community meetings as required by the functions of the position. Visit BPS schools as required by the functions of the position. Understand and comply with state and federal laws, regulations, ordinances related to water, environment, health and safety, sustainability, energy, etc. Responds to emergencies and executes contingency plans as needed: Available, as needed, after business hours to assist in handling emergency situations. Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Program Director; Project Director, Assistant Director, Director and Chief Operating Officer. QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Planning/Policy, or Sustainability, or a related field. 7-10 years of experience employed in a professional setting. Experience working in an educational setting, especially with children and teachers. Experience in school construction and contracts. Familiarity with reading and reviewing plans and specs, working with building trades, and construction processes. Experience with budget and financial management. Experience using computers, Microsoft Office suite, Google Drive suite, and electronic communications tools. Experience with management of small and large projects, including fundraising, managing budgets and timelines, coordinating with stakeholders, and reporting on project results. Extensive experience initiating and managing relationships with various partners in the private and public sectors. Current authorization to work in the United States. An understanding of and commitment to gain greater understanding of what is necessary for an urban school system to enjoy continuous improvement in an increasingly complex and competitive environment. A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education. TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES Working knowledge of sustainability and climate issues, especially in building design, construction, and operations, environment, health, and safety, and energy and waste management. Understanding of behavior change strategies, social marketing approaches, and systems thinking applications. Ability to prepare written and oral reports and give public presentations. Ability to initiate, manage, and complete small and large facilities and sustainability projects. Self-motivated with strong organizational, facilitation, and multitasking skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Committed team player with consensus-building approach. Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals. Operating knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel and Google Drive apps. Knowledge of MA OSHA, EPA, and AQMD policies and procedures as they relate to sustainability, energy, environment, and school buildings. Must possess a valid driver’s license and have daily availability of an automobile for travel to assigned schools. QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED Any of the following Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications Project Management LEED GA or LEED AP O+M WELL AP Massachusetts Asbestos Management Planner Massachusetts Asbestos Project Monitor Massachusetts Asbestos Designer OSHA 10 hr General Safety District asbestos training certification (required within 30 days) Familiarity with the city of Boston and Boston Public Schools.
