Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a temporary Engineer I or II – Mechanical Project Engineer to join our Power Production Engineering and Construction team.

This position is based at Idaho Power’s downtown Boise location.

What does an Engineer I or II – Mechanical Project Engineer do for us?

This Engineer will be responsible for engineering and project management for the Power Production Project Management team. The primary focus of this position is executing betterment projects that support the turbine and generator refurbishment program at Idaho Power’s hydroelectric plants. This person will work within a team environment, under limited supervision. Responsibilities include:

  • Management of large, multi-year, capital projects including budget management and scheduling

  • Engineering and design support for projects managed

  • Construction management at our hydroelectric facilities

  • Executing and managing contracts with multiple suppliers including change orders, shipping arrangements, and payments

  • Evaluation and testing for equipment condition and performance

  • Develop cost and power estimates for new/proposed projects

  • Use engineering knowledge to develop component refurbishment and new equipment technical specifications

  • Manage resources, both internal and contracted, including: Engineers, Drafters, Electricians, and Mechanics

  • Provide support for FERC licensing activities

  • Position will include extended field projects at power plants in our service territory

Engineer I

Operating under general supervision and with oversight, an Engineer I is developing technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads assignments and projects, interfaces with internal departments and external organizations, and receives guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.

Engineer II

Operating under limited supervision, an Engineer II has an intermediate level of technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads moderately complex assignments and projects, interfaces with internal departments and external organizations, and receives high-level guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • Engineering principles

  • Comprehensive, specific, and progressive knowledge related to mechanical engineering

Preferred:

  • Excellent knowledge of engineering principles as they apply to design and construction of projects including mechanical and electrical elements

  • Utilities and their business environment

  • Safety practices and OSHA requirements

  • Construction methods, materials, standards, and equipment

  • Power plant operations and maintenance

  • FEA/CFD and how to interpret results

Skills in:

  • Strong interdisciplinary skills

  • Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of problems, alternatives, and recommendations

Preferred:

  • Manage and coordinate multiple complex projects to schedule and budget

  • Applying engineering knowledge to real life plant betterment and repair projects

  • Rapidly develop solutions to problems as they arise in the field

  • Break tasks into small components and ensure all details are included in the finished product

  • Read and understand engineering drawings and diagrams; gather, organize, and analyze engineering project data

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution

OR

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited institution and a P.E. license

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering

Experience:

  • Engineer I – 0-2 years related experience

  • Engineer II – 2 or more years of related experience

Preferred:

  • Engineer I/II – Engineer in Training (EIT) designation

  • Previous experience in design, maintenance, or plant engineering of hydroelectric power plants

  • Previous experience refurbishing heavy equipment

  • Project and/or construction management experience

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

Preferred:

  • Professional Engineer (PE)

  • Note: PE licensure in the State of Idaho will be a requirement for long term advancement

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position has both office and field requirements. This position requires working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. It also requires walking on even/uneven surfaces and ascents/descents, up to 5 miles daily, while carrying 14-26 lbs. of equipment. Lifting of up to 36 lbs. and carrying up to 30 lbs., (up to 50 feet), is performed occasionally. Climbing of ladders/racks and work within elevated lifts (up to 40 feet high) with competency in use of safety equipment is required. Squatting, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lying at ground level is performed to work within confined spaces of power plants/dams/generators, for extended intervals up to a full shift. Driving is required to perform work throughout the IPC territory, (3-7 hours). The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Drive to various generation facilities as needed, with some overnight stays, occasionally multiple nights in a row. This position is based in Corporate Headquarters office in Boise with frequent travel to our generation facilities.

  • Occasionally work in proximity to hazardous areas, and therefore must have thorough familiarity and strict conformance with all state and federal safety rules as well as Idaho Power’s safety procedures.

  • Must have adequate mobility to frequently climb multiple flights of stairs as well as the agility to crawl into and around complex machinery to access construction and maintenance sites and confined spaces.
