This position may be covered by a Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (VEBA) *JOB DUTIES: This position is for a Weights and Measures Inspector responsible for enforcement of Montana State and National Standards regarding weighing and measuring devices of commodities. Duties include but are not limited to testing and inspecting weighing devices, package testing of commodities sold by weight and volume and conducting country of origin label inspections. Compliance Specialists provide technical assistance about Montana law and rule along with NIST handbook 44 code to Product Manufacturers, Retailers, Wholesalers and Owners/Operators of scales and weighing devices. W&M Inspectors are also responsible for performing a variety of administrative tasks to facilitate and document inspection activities. Extensive travel is required for this position. The successful candidate must live in Billings or the surrounding area. Most travel will only include the southeast region of Montana but can include traveling to all areas of the state if special circumstances arise, assisting as needed in other regions. As a Weights and Measures Inspector your duties will include: * Test, inspect, and certify weighing and measuring devices to ensure they are correct, and suitable for use. * Inspect, sample, and analyze all commodities sold by weight, volume, or dimension in the state of Montana to ensure truthful advertising, assess compliance with packaging and label requirements. * Conduct "COOL" Country of Origin Label inspects to ensure compliance from retailers and report back to the findings backs to the USDA. * Provide technical assistance and information to product manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers, technical maintenance personnel, and owners/operators of scales and weighing devices to encourage good processes and promote compliance. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITES: If you are the right person for this opportunity, you will have the following knowledge, skills or abilities: * National Institute for Standards and Technology requirements: NIST Handbook 44, 130, and 133 for the specifications and tolerances for weighing and measuring devices. * Montana State laws and administrative rules pertaining to Title 30 Chapter 12 of the Montana Code Annotated. * Installation and use requirements for variety of weighing and measuring devices. * Specifications and Tolerances for Reference Standards * Commodity marketing, packaging, advertising, and labeling practices, and requirements. * The principles and practices of mathematics including algebra. * The operation of a variety of weighing and measuring devices. * Driving pickups and semi-trucks on all seasons of road conditions. * Deductive reasoning and applying a variety of regulations and standards to various situations when issues arise. * Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS The position of a Compliance Specialist requires the potential to work in all weather conditions, but also allows a flexible schedule. This allows the inspector to schedule their work around changing weather conditions. Being a W&M Inspector is a physically demanding job when testing some scales. Inspectors must move ten or more fifty-pound weights depending on the capacity of the scales to conduct a proper test. Other testing only requires a thirty pound or gram weight kit to test small scales, while large capacity scales the inspector is operating equipment weighing up to a total of twenty-five thousand pounds to conduct the test. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Your preparation for this opportunity could include a combination of relevant experiences including: * CDL Driver’s License with/or ability to add manual transmission endorsement. * 3-years of experience in regulatory enforcement or working with scales or 5 years directly related qualifying experience. OR * Any combination of equivalent experience and education to successfully perform the essential functions of the position will be considered. The successful candidate must have a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and must pass a DOT drug test and DOT physical after an offer of employment has been made. Driving experience is preferred.
