Primary Purpose

To provide instruction or lab instructional support within the veterinarian technician program in accordance with the standards established by the American Veterinary Medical Association. This individual must demonstrate a potential for excellent classroom and lab instruction, including curriculum development and evaluation of student performance in the classroom. This individual will work with the program director or primary class instructor to align coursework with program requirements.

This is a part-time instructor position, non-represented and non-benefited.

Essenatial Duties and Responsibilities

Direct Teaching:

  • Provide instruction for veterinary technician students in the lecture and laboratory settings along with full time tenure track faculty members and part-time faculty members. This includes providing individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and/or evening, classes taught on any of the four campuses COCC serves, by interactive video chat technology.

  • Prepare laboratory environments for instruction by assembling necessary resources.

  • Clean and maintain instructional lab equipment, and assist in cleanup of laboratory sessions.

  • Assist other vet tech faculty with demonstrations, observation, and evaluation of student essential skills performance.

  • Remain current in the field of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Technician and/or Veterinary Technician Education through a variety of professional activities.

  • Attend regular trainings as scheduled by the department or College.

Plan and Design of Courses:

  • Support department faculty with copying class materials, stapling, and hole-punching; sort papers and/or supplies.

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain records of activities undertaken in the laboratory which may include typing forms, inputting data or otherwise retaining information regarding students and their progress in meeting instructional goals.

  • Cooperate with the Business Department efforts to revise and standardize curricula for these classes.

  • Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to each location, as assigned.

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

  • Thorough knowledge in the field of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Technician and/or Veterinary Technician Training and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.

  • Desire to work with and advocate for all species (large, small, exotics, lab, birds, fish) and a commitment to increase the knowledge base in these species.

  • Knowledge and vision of the Certified Veterinary Technician’s role in the veterinary profession.

  • Experience working with Certified Veterinary Technicians in a clinical, research, and/or academic setting, and Clinical experience with both large and small animals.

  • Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.

  • Visual ability, corrected, to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.

  • Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers, video chat technology (e.g. Zoom) and familiarity with or willingness to learn the learning management system ( LMS ) used at COCC .

  • Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.

  • Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.

  • Ability to work with other faculty and COCC staff at all levels.

  • Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.

    Ergonomic Requirements

Work is performed in a classroom and office environment using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. The employee is regularly required use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Must be able to kneel, stoop, crawl, and crouch. Physical movements involve guiding, feeding materials into proper position. Lifting objects vary daily, up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current Oregon License Veterinarian or Certified Veterinary Technician by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board (by the time of hire).

  • If not a licensed Veterinarian, must have an Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology or Veterinary Technician from an accredited institution and have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ) and be a credentialed Veterinary Technician.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a licensed Veterinarian or Certified Veterinary Technician with the handling and management of animals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or Education

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited institution and current license as a veterinarian by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board

  • Previous teaching experience at the post-secondary level and current knowledge of educational theory and methodology.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with community Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians

  • Experience in curriculum development at the post-secondary levels.
