We are looking for a skilled engineer to design and build self-service tools that help software development teams publish code, at speed. Our tools support multiple workflows, plugin to various services across Amazon and scale as workloads increase. Our team owns feature development, performance, scalability and excellence on all our tools. You will work directly with our customers to make sure that changes and feature requests are balanced with performance and stability.

It is a challenge to work with hundreds of developers who rely on these tools and is also a great opportunity for engineers who are looking to push themselves and prove that they can achieve great things.

Our tools are critical to developer productivity, which means architecting a scalable, fault-tolerant system is essential.

You will engage with experienced, cross-disciplinary staff to conceive and design innovative solutions. You must be responsive, flexible and able to succeed within an open collaborative environment. You will take part in designing solutions to hard problems across a global platform. You will work closely with multiple DevOps teams to drive the SDLC from concept to launch and ensuring the highest level of for your deliverables.

Scope of Work

As a senior member of the team, you’ll be leading the architecture and optimization of our Yocto based build system and infrastructure that powers the build systems used for more than a dozen product lines. You’ll work directly with customers across the organization, propose and implement self-service tools to enable software development teams to publish code at scale and speed. The solutions you develop will power one of the largest build fleets at Amazon and will impact the productivity of hundreds of developers. The work you do will be at the forefront of new product initiatives and development, and will enable the next generation of Amazon devices. The tools and features you will develop, being critical to developer productivity, will be fault tolerant as well as designed for scale.

We are a team of experienced engineers in the Device OS org who own the build and release infrastructure, as well as developer experience self-service tools, that cater to the rest of our OS and Application developer community. Our engineers have backgrounds that range from SCM and DevOps to expertise in AWS technology stacks, Yocto, Build Toolchains and productivity tools. The OS and application developers are our customers and our roadmap is driven by the desire to improve their development experience.

Key job responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of key features.

  • Will work with other team members to investigate design approaches, prototype new technology and evaluate technical feasibility.

  • Driving your own projects, from design through planning to execution. Also work with teams across Amazon on cross-team initiatives.

  • Planning and coordinating feature improvements and upgrades around services.

  • Improving the user experience around services.

  • Analyzing and improving availability, efficiency, capacity, scalability, security and performance of our services.

  • Representing Systems while working with internal teams and external partners.

  • Troubleshooting and resolving problems with production systems as part of our on-call rotation.

  • Developing and maintaining tools.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience leading the design, automation, deployment, and support of large-scale infrastructure

  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust

  • Experience with Linux/Unix

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with distributed systems at scale

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $235,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
