Job Summary/Basic Function

About This Role:

Reporting to the Executive Director for the Office of International Education & Services ( OIES ), the Assistant Director for International Student Engagement, Retention, and Success is responsible for overseeing international student health insurance management, event and programming direction, planning, guidance, risk assessment, customer service management, and F and J regulations.

What You’ll Do – Position Duties

  1. Student Engagement, Retention, and Success Administer
  • Health Insurance for international students and scholars and their dependents.

  • Develop, promote, and evaluate social, educational, and cultural programs, including but not limited to New Student Orientation, Graduation Celebration Reception, President’s Reception, Biweekly Coffee Hours, Halloween, Thanksgiving Feast, International Cultural Festival, International Soccer Tournament, Badminton with the President, Holi Festival, Indoor Intramural Sports Events, Tailgating events, and Cardinal View Events.

  • Serve as the primary contact for all international prospective and admitted students to guide them on visa processes, airport pick-up information, course registration, health insurance information, international orientation holds, etc.

  • Coordinate and oversee programs that promote international education and cultural awareness for the campus community.

  • Serve as the co-advisor to the International Student Council.

  • Assist in the development and management of budgets for select programs and activities.

  • Provide guidance and assistance to international student organizations in planning, organizing, and delivering events and activities that enhance the student experience and strengthen the University’s recruitment and retention objectives.

  • Monitor student organization compliance with university, state, and federal mandates.

  • Host biweekly virtual town hall meetings with admitted students to update them on student life at Lamar University and prepare them for the New Student Orientation.

  • Collaborate with peer professionals and academic advisors throughout Lamar University to assist with student enrollment and social, educational, and cultural programs.

  • Develop fundraising campaigns and seek sponsorships within Lamar University and the Southeast Texas communities to fund social, educational, and cultural programs.

  • Develop marketing materials for OIES social, educational, and cultural events.

  • Develop and execute customer service surveys, share results, and make recommendations for improvement.

  • Assist with annual reports using Formstack and other data sources.

  • Other assigned projects per OIES needs.

  1. F and J Compliance
  • Serve as DSO advisor to F-1 students and ARO advisor to J-1 scholars.

Key Competencies:

  • Ability to communicate diplomatically, clearly, and effectively, both verbally and in writing with the international student population.

  • Experience with program development and assessment.

  • Experience writing reports.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to pay attention to details, set priorities, coordinate, and complete a number of competing assignments within established deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and achieve optimal results with minimal oversight. · Demonstrated positive human relations and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well one-on-one with students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office.

  • Critical thinking skills for problem-solving.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the needs of diverse international students.

  • Technical expertise with computer applications and automated systems.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements:

Able to lift 25 pounds and be able to perform a variety of physical tasks including lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, stair climbing, and walking between buildings.

Job Conditions:

The position is primarily office-based with regular working hours. It may require occasional evening and weekend work to accommodate events, meetings, and activities. The role involves interacting with international students and collaborating with various university departments and external organizations. The Assistant Director may need to travel between campus buildings and handle physical tasks related to event setup and management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum of three years of full-time employment in higher education

  • Minimum of three years in international student services, study abroad, student success, student activities, event planning, academic advising, etc.
