About our opportunity:

The City of Asheville - Police Department is looking for a qualified, professional Evidence & Property Technician. The purpose of this position is to preserve and store all evidence and property submitted to the evidence room. Work involves receiving and maintaining detailed custody records of evidence and personal property, transferring property and evidence to courts, obtaining court orders for evidence disposition, and all other duties as assigned. Employee is responsible for assisting the Evidence and Property Manager in maintaining the inventory of property, ordering and disseminating supplies, and assisting the Evidence and Property Manager in conducting preparations for auction of seized and unclaimed property. Employee in this class also performs clerical-administrative work assisting Department personnel in all property/evidence matters. Employee must exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with Department personnel, property owners, and any other personnel. Work is performed under general supervision of the Evidence and Property Manager and is evaluated in terms of the accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness of performance.

What you'll be doing:

  • Receives, records, safeguards, releases and oversees the release and disposal of all types of police property and evidence.

  • Tracks the movement and maintains chain of custody documentation for all property and evidence. Checking items in computerized evidence storage program.

  • Assembles and organizes evidence for presentation in court; work closely with detectives and the court system.

  • Coordinates the release, destruction, and disposal of adjudicated property and evidence as authorized; releases items to rightful owners; prepares associated reports.

  • Physically carries and places items in correct locations for storage weekly.

  • Stocks evidence preparation room and maintains clean workstation.

  • Transfers items to lab as needed.

  • Conducts research in computer databases to determine property custody status.

  • All other duties as assigned.

    We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered :

  • High School Graduate/GED

  • At least one year of related experience

  • Must become certified by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation in the operation of the Division of Criminal Information network within the first year of employment. Please know that this certification requires U.S. Citizenship.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina or out-of-state with the ability to obtain the same.

    Other things to know:

  • Full-Time 40 hours per week; Standard work week hours are 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday with a rotating Tuesday shift of 6am to 3pm. There is also an "on-call" assignment which rotates for approximately one week every six weeks.

    *Final candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment medical exam to include a hearing and vision test and other requirements set by the NC Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission. These physicals require a scheduled appointment. The City's Physician or Physician Assistant must provide final clearance. The exams are at the City's expense after a conditional offer is made, but before a final offer of employment.

    • The entire hiring process can take up to six months. Applications who are not selected after the interview phase may reapply after one year as long as the applicant has not been permanently disqualified from employment.

    Initial review of applications will occur on May 13th, 2024. This position will remain open until filled (or date if closing date listed) or until a sufficient number of applications are received.

Automatic Disqualification:

  • Any conviction of a felony.

  • A DUI or DWI conviction in the last five (5) years.

  • Any use of hard illegal drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine, LSD or heroin within the past two (2) years.

  • Dishonorable discharge from any military service.

  • Less than honorable discharges will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

  • Untruthfulness or intentionally withholding information on any application, interview, or paperwork associated with the position.

  • Cheating on any examination or testing associated with the position.

  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.

  • Ability to present court testimony effectively.

  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in frequent contact with the general public.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to maintain a neat and orderly work environment.

  • Ability to attend and participate in training sessions related to the area of evidence management, law enforcement related procedures, and professional development.
